Turn on provisional push notifications to message iOS users who haven't granted full notification permissions. Target this audience from a Push Notification activity in Journey Builder.
How It Works
With Apple's provisional authorization in iOS 12 and later, an app can skip the standard permission prompt and immediately show notifications. Because these notifications appear quietly in the Notification Center with no banner, sound, or badge, users can look at them when they’re ready.
In iOS, every provisional notification includes Keep and Turn Off buttons. This approach gives your brand a trial period instead of an upfront prompt. To demonstrate value to users, send a few useful messages. Then, let users opt in to full notifications when they're ready. This pattern typically produces higher long-term opt-in rates.
You can select from the following Notification Audience types:
| NOTIFICATION AUDIENCES | REACHES |
|---|---|
| Opted-In Users (default) | All push-enabled devices, including iOS devices with only provisional authorization |
| Provisional Users Only | iOS devices with provisional authorization and no explicit permission |
| Opted-In, Excluding Provisional Users | Devices with only explicit push permission |
