Use educational characteristics to manage enrollment eligibility and communicate
eligibility criteria to students during course registration. Registrars define and assign
identity-based attributes to students that apply to specific time frames. The registration
process evaluates a student's attributes against course requirements to determine their
eligibility.

Educational characteristics define time-bound, identity-based attributes for students, such
as field of study, honors status, or cohort affiliation, to determine eligibility for course
registration. For example, the registrar creates Biology Major, Senior, and Junior educational
characteristics for the Academic Profile type. For the Spring academic term, the registrar
assigns Biology Major and Senior to Student A, and Biology Major and Junior to Student B. Each
educational characteristic record generates a corresponding educational characteristic
requirement record for assignment to courses.
To prepare for the Spring registration period, the registrar defines and then assigns the
Biology Major and Senior requirements to courses that only accept seniors in Biology. For
courses open to both juniors and seniors, the registrar uses a guided setup to define the
requirement logic—(Junior OR Senior) AND Biology Major.
During Spring registration, Student A is eligible to register for both sets of courses.
Student B is only eligible to register for courses that accept juniors. In the Course Search
and Registration portal, students can see the requirements for all courses and make informed
enrollment decisions.
