vCenter Hierarchy Process Job

Turn discovered VMware vCenter objects into a navigable virtualization hierarchy. The vCenter Hierarchy process job connects data centers, clusters, folders, ESXi hosts, virtual machines, and guest operating systems.

Required Editions

Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited Editions with Agentforce IT Service that have Discovery enabled.

How the vCenter Hierarchy Is Mapped

A vCenter scan brings vCenter servers, data centers, clusters, folders, ESXi hosts, and virtual machines into Configuration Management Database (CMDB). The vCenter Hierarchy process job connects those configuration items into a hierarchy and associates ESXi hosts with discovered guest operating systems.

When to Run the Job

Run the job after a vCenter scan and after host discovery has collected the guest operating systems. Rerun it after virtualization changes, such as vMotion events or the addition of virtual machines and hosts. To start the job, see Run a Process Job.

Relationships Created

Source and Target Relationship What It Means How It’s Matched
VMware vCenter to Datacenter Contains A vCenter server contains a data center. The job uses the parent-child structure reported by vCenter.
VMware vCenter Datacenter to Cluster Contains A data center contains a compute cluster. The job uses the parent-child structure reported by vCenter.
VMware vCenter Datacenter to Folder Contains A data center contains an organizing folder. The job uses the parent-child structure reported by vCenter.
VMware vCenter Cluster to Folder Contains A cluster contains a folder. The job uses the parent-child structure reported by vCenter.
VMware vCenter Cluster to ESXi Host Contains A cluster contains an ESXi host. The job uses the parent-child structure reported by vCenter.
VMware vCenter Folder to ESXi Host Contains A folder contains an ESXi host. The job uses the parent-child structure reported by vCenter.
Virtual Machine to ESXi Host Virtualized On A virtual machine runs on an ESXi host. The job uses the host-to-virtual-machine membership reported by vCenter.
ESXi Host to Host Esxi virtualises host An ESXi host runs a guest operating system. The guest IP address of the virtual machine matches the IP address of a discovered Windows, Linux, or Unix server or Windows host.

If the guest operating system hasn't been discovered, the virtual machine remains in the ESXi hierarchy. A later job run creates the guest operating system relationship after host discovery finds a matching IP address.
