Records plot on the map after they have a verified latitude and longitude. Salesforce Maps geocodes records by matching their address fields against a geocoding provider and writing the resulting coordinates back to the record.

- Existing values are never overwritten. If a record already has latitude and longitude values, Maps doesn't replace them. To re-geocode a record, first clear its coordinate fields.
- 0,0 is a valid coordinate (it's a location in the Gulf of Guinea). Records with
Latitude = 0andLongitude = 0plot on the map at that location. They aren't treated as blank. Make sure that coordinate fields are truly null, not zero, for records that you want geocoded. - Address completeness matters. For best results, records have a complete address: street, city, state, postal code, and country. Incomplete addresses reduce geocoding accuracy.
- Data coverage varies by region. See the Geocoding data coverage article for supported countries and accuracy levels.
Configure custom latitude and longitude fields on a base object if you store coordinates in nonstandard fields. Set these fields under Base Object | Edit Existing | Coordinate Fields.
Run a geocoding batch
Geocode existing records in bulk so they plot on the map.
- From Setup > Installed Packages, find Salesforce Maps and click Configure.
- Open Batch Process Settings.
- Select the base object and the records to geocode.
- Start the batch, and then monitor its progress until it finishes.
You can also geocode records by plotting the layer that contains them.
