The default sharing setting for assets is Controlled by Parent, which requires a parent
account and/or contact to be defined for an asset. However, assets do not always require parent
accounts. To remove this restriction, change the default sharing setting.

From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Sharing Settings, then
select Sharing Settings.

Under Organization-Wide Defaults, click Edit.

For
Asset,
change Default Internal Access from Controlled by Parent to
Public Read Only, Public Read/Write, or
Private, depending on your requirements.

Save your changes.
