Pause a ServiceNow Backup Service

You can limit a vendor's access to your data during proof of concept or testing periods. By pausing instead of archiving, you can define when to resume backups and avoid losing backup coverage.

In some cases, the admin would like to disable the scheduled backups from running for a specific period.

Pausing backups in a service can be useful in the following scenarios:

  • Limiting access to a customer’s data, during PoCs or other testing periods.
  • Accounts with a high degree of automation and external tools, might be more sensitive to throughput limitations (that require completing other heavy processes, aside from backup).

The advantage of pausing a service to address the scenarios mentioned above (as opposed to archiving it), is to avoid the risk of forgetting to unarchive the service, and having no backup coverage to fall back on (from the archiving date forward). The Pause function enables the admin to define when to resume the backing up.

Data services, Metadata services, Production backup services, and Sandbox backup services can be paused.

  1. From your account’s Services screen, select the production or sandbox service you wish to pause.
  2. Select the Options tab and then select the General tab.
  3. In the General tab click the three dots and select Pause or Archive Service.
  4. Select the Pause backups for radio button, and then select the number of days to pause the backups for (up to 14 days).
  5. Click the Archive button.
A confirmation message appears at the bottom of the screen.

After the pause period ends, the service will resume backing up automatically.

At any given time, the user can manually Unpause This Service from the Options|General tab.

Note
Note Archiving or pausing a backup service generates an event (which can be reviewed in the Auditing tab of the Account Settings screen), and sends an email. Unarchiving or unpausing a backup service generates an event, but doesn't send an email.
