Data Extension Extract in Automation Studio

This Automation Studio data extract type extracts information from a data extension and places it in a delimited file.

Note
Note Using a standard data extension extract doesn't guarantee that the extracted rows are in the same order they were inserted. To enforce a specific order, create a custom extract.
Note
Note When you export a Decimal field, the extract file omits the zero before the decimal point. To keep that zero in the file, store the value in a Text field.

The data extension extract type requires this information in the fields section:

  • The character you want to use to delimit each column. The default is a comma, but you can enter tab for a tab-delimited file or | for a pipe-delimited file.
  • For DECustomerKey, enter the data extension’s external key.
  • HasColumnHeaders determines whether the extract file includes column headers.
  • TextQualified determines whether text within the data extension appears within double quotation marks.
  • UsesLineFeed determines whether a new line is generated based on the field selected in the data extension.

The data extension extract type also supports these optional settings. Each setting is turned off by default, so the existing extracts are unaffected unless you turn on settings for them.

  • Add_Selected_File_Encoding writes the output file using the encoding that's selected in Output Format. When off, the file uses the default encoding (UTF-16).
  • Output Format sets the character encoding of the output file when Add_Selected_File_Encoding is on. The default is UTF-16.
  • Convert_All_Dates_to_Selected_Timezone converts all date and time columns in the output from server time to the time zone that's selected in Timezone. When off, dates aren't converted.
  • Timezone sets the time zone that's applied to date and time columns when Convert_All_Dates_to_Selected_Timezone is on.
  • Add_Timestamp_to_File_Name controls the datepart in the output file name. The datepart is the text after the last underscore in the file name. When this setting is turned on, the datepart in the output file name is retained in the file name. When off, the datepart is removed from the file name.
  • Create_Tar_Gz_Output_File compresses the output file into a gzip-compressed tar archive (.tar.gz) in the output folder. The archive uses the base file name with a .tar.gz extension. For example, MyExtract.csv produces a file with the name MyExtract.tar.gz.

Create a file transfer activity and select Move a File From Safehouse as the File Action. Add the name of the file from the data extension data extract in the File Naming Pattern field to move the extract to another file location.

Note
Note Make sure to use the same file naming pattern for the file transfer activity that you use when setting up the data extension extract using the data extract activity.

Save both the data extract and the file transfer activity. Then, create an automation that includes the data extract as the first step with the file transfer activity next. You can run the automation one time or set it to run at scheduled times. Use third-party FTP software to move the file from your chosen file location to your computer.
