Enable Tableau Agent in Slack

When enabled, your users can open Tableau Agent in Slack. They can then ask questions in context about metrics and dashboards that have been shared to Slack from Tableau Next. The agent runs a query allowed based on the user's permissions, and analyzes questions based on the data for the metric and the semantic model enabled for the agent in Tableau Next.

Set Up Tableau Agent in Slack

To enable Tableau Agent in Slack, you'll need to perform setup tasks or confirm settings in both Tableau Next and Slack. Before you begin, it's helpful to review the general requirements and steps for enabling this feature.

  1. Salesforce and Slack must be connected, and then Slack must be enabled for Tableau Next. For more information, see Connect Salesforce and Slack and Enable Slack for Tableau Next.
  2. Tableau Agent and Data Analysis must be enabled in Tableau Next Features (Setup). For more information, see "Activate Tableau Agent in Tableau Next" in Set Up Tableau Agent in Tableau Next .
  3. An agent must be built from the Analytics and Visualization template in Agent Builder, and the agent must use the Data Analysis subagent. For more information, see "Create an Agent with the Analytics and Visualization Template" in Set Up Tableau Agent in Tableau Next.
  4. Agentforce must be connected and enabled in Slack (covered in this topic).
  5. The agent created from the Analytics and Visualization template must be installed and enabled in Slack (covered in this topic).
  6. A Tableau Next metric or dashboard must be shared in Slack. For more information, see Share Tableau Next Metrics in Slack.

After Tableau Agent is enabled in Slack, users can interact with it when they open a metric or dashboard shared from Tableau Next in Slack.

When a user views a shared metric or dashboard preview in Slack, Slack searches for connected agents that specifically meet the following criteria (listed below). The Ask Agentforce for Analytics button is then displayed in the preview for agents that meet the criteria. When a use clicks Ask Agentforce for Analytics, the relevant agent opens in Slack.

  • The Analytics and Visualization agent is installed in Slack and enabled in the workspace.
  • That agent uses the Data Analysis subagent.
  • That agent is from the same Salesforce org that the metric or dashboard is shared from.
  • The Slack user has user permission to access the agent (defined by the Salesforce user agent permission).
  • If multiple agents meet the previous criteria (multiple agents in Slack are qualified to answer questions about the metric or dashboard), the first agent installed and activated in Slack opens for the user.

Configure Slack and Tableau Next

Tableau Next must be connected to Slack and enabled for collaboration.

Note
Note Session Settings that restrict IPs impact the integration between Slack and Salesforce. To resolve this, open Session Settings. Confirm that Lock sessions to the IP address from which they originated and Enforce login IP ranges on every request aren't enabled.

A Slack Admin and Salesforce Admin need to perform these steps.

  1. In Slack, select the workspace space name, select Tools & settings, and then select Manage Salesforce Organizations.
  2. On the Salesforce organizations page, select Connect Salesforce Org.
  3. Copy the org prefix from the URL for your Salesforce org, prepend it to my.salesforce.com, and paste that URL in Salesforce org to connect to the Salesforce organizations page. For example, uniqueOrgNamePrefix.my.salesforce.com.
  4. From the Choose a Slack user account field, select Email. This sets the method used for authentication.
  5. Select Request Connection. This triggers a request for the Salesforce Admin to approve.
  6. In your Salesforce org, select Setup.
  7. In the Quick Find box, enter Slack Connection, and then select Manage Slack Connection. The pending request from your Slack workspace will be displayed.
  8. From User Configuration, for Salesforce Mapping Field, select Email. Agree to all terms and then click Approve.
  9. In Slack, refresh the Salesforce organizations page to see the approval for the Salesforce org connection. Click your Salesforce org name in the list, and then click Activate.
  10. In the Activate this connection window, confirm the activation method is correct, and then click Activate again.
  11. In the Salesforce Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Tableau Next, then select Tableau Next Features. Confirm that Collaborate with Slack and Tableau Next is enabled.

Enable Tableau Agent and Data Analysis in Tableau Next

After connecting Slack and your Salesforce org and enabling collaboration with Slack and Tableau Next, you’re ready to set up the agent.

  • Tableau Agent and Data Analysis must be enabled in Tableau Next Features (Setup) to make the Analytics and Visualization template available.

  • An agent must be built from the Analytics and Visualization template in Agent Builder, with the Data Analysis subagent added. For more information, see "Create an Agent with the Analytics and Visualization Template" in Set Up Tableau Agent in Tableau Next.

Enable Tableau Agent for Use in Slack

This step requires that your Salesforce org is already connected to Slack, and an Agentforce agent has already been created in Salesforce from the Analytics and Visualization template, with the Data Analysis subagent added.

Select a pending connection following these steps.

  1. From the Setup page, enter Agents in the Quick Find box, then select Agentforce Agents.
  2. Click the name for the agent you created from the Analytics and Visualization template.
  3. In the Agent Details page, select Open in Builder.
  4. In the Agentforce Builder page, select Connections, and then select Add.
  5. In the Add external app window, for Connection Type, select API. For Integration Name, enter Slack. For Connected App, enter Slack to search for it. Select Slack, and then select Save.
  6. If Slack is already set up as the connected app, use the existing connection. If a Slack connection hasn't been set up, select Setup, search for oauth in Quick Find, and then select Connected Apps Oauth Usage. Slack should be a suggested app. For Slack, click Install. In the Connected Apps Oauth Usage page, verify that Slack is now installed.
  7. In the Connections page in Agentforce Builder, confirm that Slack is listed as a connection in the Salesforce org.
Next, the Slack Organization Admin needs to approve the connection for the workspace in Slack.
  8. Select the workspace space name, select Tools & settings, and then select Manage Agentforce.
  9. In the Agentforce settings page, confirm the Analytics and Visualization agent is listed as Ready to install. Select Review for that agent, and then click Allow.
  10. In the Add Analytics and Visualization to a workspace window, select the workspaces that you want to add the agent to, and then select Add to Workspaces. In the Agentforce page, click the Active Agents tab to confirm the agent has been activated.
  11. In the connected Slack workspace, the Ask Agentforce for Analytics button should now be available on the metrics card menu in Slack for users who have permission to use this agent in the connected Salesforce org.

Test the Agent in Slack

To confirm the agent is available in Slack, you can open a shared metric or dashboard and ask questions using Agentforce.

  1. Share a metric or dashboard in Slack.
  2. View a shared metric or dashboard in Slack.
  3. Select Ask Agentforce for Analytics in the metric or dashboard card menu. Then, use natural language to ask Agentforce to analyze your data. For example, "Break down total sales this quarter by product family."
  4. Or, in a thread that contains the shared metric or dashboard, mention the name of the agent followed by a question, For example, "What product family is leading in total sales this year?"

For more examples of the types of questions you can ask the analytics agent, see Supported Questions and Surfaces for Tableau Agent with Data Analysis.
