A metric is a KPI tracked over time, such as revenue over the past year. The core components of a metric are a measure or calculated field representing the KPI and a time dimension that tracks its progression over time.
For example, you can create a sales performance metric to track overall sales across all regions, helping you assess whether your business is meeting its targets over a set period.
Create metrics to have a single source of truth for all your business KPIs and to view the same metric in every dashboard, record page, or homepage of any platform.
For more granularity, you can add submetrics to a metric. For example, you can create a submetric for sales performance by product line to analyze how each product contributes to overall sales.

Create a metric to standardize how your organization measures performance. - Set Data-Defined Goals
Data-defined goals are based on a measure in the semantic data model. With data-defined goals, anyone who filters or follows a sub-metric inherits the goal, and the goal stays synchronized when the source goal value changes. For example, you can create a data-defined goal based on the win rate measure. If the team has a data-defined win rate goal of 30%, and the West territory has its own goal of 28%, then users who filter the sub-metric to the West territory see the correct goal—28%. This way, users don’t need to create individual goals for each sub-metric, and your team stays in sync working towards the same goal. When a data-defined goal exists, individual goals for sub-metric can’t be created and vice versa. - Submetric Goals in Data 360

A metric is a business KPI that you can track over time and use to assess performance or business processes. Sub-metrics are detailed performance indicators that provide additional granularity to a main metric. They allow you to break down primary metrics into more specific, actionable data points, offering deeper insights and more precise analysis.
