Tableau MCP
Tableau MCP
is the Model Context Protocol server that turns your natural language prompts into Tableau authoring actions. It packages Tableau Studio’s viz authoring skills, deep functional and procedural knowledge, and data visualization best practices as expertise and tools that can be driven through Tableau Agent or the agent of your choice.
Tableau External Client API
Tableau External Client API
makes the actions in classic Tableau Desktop available for programmatic use. Today this REST API surface is delivered in Tableau Studio. The API can be coded directly, and its operations are expressed as tools in Tableau MCP
, making it available through Tableau Agent or through any agent of your choice.
Extensions API
coming at GA
Extensions API (Coming in 2026.3 release) enables you to extend your Tableau viz, dashboard, and, as of the October 2026 (2026.3) release, your entire Tableau workspace, including toolbars and menus.
Tableau Packages Guide
coming at GA
Packages (Coming in 2026.3 release) are a content type added in the October 2026 (2026.3) release. They are containers that have the same permissions and roles model as a workbook or data source. They are deployable as .tpkg files and, in many ways, have the same deployment story as an extension file (.trex). Additionally, packages support embedding an extension’s web app resources. This enables you to host your extension web app on Tableau service and avoid standing up external hosting for your app.
