# Step 1: Activate your Salesforce Org
> [!WARNING]
>
> As of 14 October 2025, Data Cloud has been rebranded to Data 360. During this transition, you may see references to Data Cloud in our application and documentation. While the name is new, the functionality and content remains unchanged.
**Who does this step?** Salesforce Admin
**About this step:** Tableau Next and Data Cloud require a Salesforce org as their foundation. An organisation (org) is a deployment of Salesforce that has a defined set of licensed users. Your org includes all of your data and applications. All anticipated Tableau Next users must exist in this Salesforce org.
## Activate your Salesforce org
**Why:** A Salesforce org is a company’s unique, virtual space on the Salesforce cloud platform that contains all of its Salesforce data, apps and customisations. It’s the centralised, secure hub for a company’s business operations in Salesforce, including Tableau Next, Data Cloud and Agentforce.
How to do it
After your purchase is complete, Salesforce emails an invitation to activate your new Salesforce org if you don’t already have one. Your activation provisions your Salesforce org and finalises the creation of a Salesforce Org user.
Log in to your org through the link provided in your login information email.
**Learn more**: [Activate your Salesforce org](https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-gb/setup_tabAI_site_setting.htm#set-up-einstein-generative-ai-in-salesforce).
## Verify Data Cloud is provisioned
**Why:** Data Cloud is a pre-requisite for Tableau Next. Data Cloud is automatically provisioned as soon as a Data Cloud licence is added to your Salesforce org, except in Developer orgs. Tableau Semantics is available for Data Cloud customers, and its capabilities are available in both Data Cloud and Tableau Next.
How to do it
1. At the top of any Salesforce page, select the gear icon and select Setup.
2. Enter Data Cloud in the Quick Find box and find Data Cloud Setup.
3. If that option appears, you have Data Cloud and Tableau Semantics.
**Note:** Developer orgs need to manually enable Data Cloud by selecting Get Started in Data Cloud Setup. For more information, see [Turn on Data Cloud](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_setup_provision.htm&type=5).
## Add users in your Salesforce org
**Why:** If you need to add more users besides yourself to Tableau Next, you need to add them to your Salesforce org. Users must already exist in Salesforce before you can grant them access to Data Cloud and Tableau Next. This step only adds users to your org; permission sets for Tableau Next and Data Cloud are covered in Step 3.
How to do it
Add users to your Salesforce Org:
1. In the Quick Find box in Setup, type in and select Users.
2. Select New User to add a single user, or select Add Multiple Users.
3. Select a User Licence and a profile to associate with the users you’re creating. Tableau Next users need at least the Identity user licence, but another licence can be used if applicable.

4. Select Generate passwords and notify users via email to send a login name and temporary password to each user.
5. Save your work.
For more information on adding Salesforce users, see [Guidelines for Adding Users](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.users_adding_guidelines.htm&type=5), [Add a Single User](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.adding_new_users.htm&type=5) and [Add Multiple Users](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.users_adding_multiple.htm&type=5).
## Assign Data Cloud Architect and Tableau Next Admin Permissions to a User
**Why:** Data Cloud Architect can enable and configure Data Cloud. The architect can be the same user as the Salesforce Admin or a different user. If you’re the Salesforce Admin (with a System Admin profile), you don’t need a Data Cloud standard permission set to access Data Cloud Setup. The Tableau Next Admin can enable and configure Tableau Next. The Tableau Next Admin can be the same user as the Data Cloud Architect (recommended), the Salesforce Admin or a different user.
How to do it
1. Assign Data Cloud Architect and Tableau Next Admin permissions to the user or users who will set up Data Cloud and Tableau Next and assign users permissions.
2. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, type in and select Users.

4. Add new users or edit an existing user.
5. Select a user and click Permission Set Assignments.
6. Click Edit Assignments.

7. Select the Data Cloud Architect permission set and click Add.
8. Select the Tableau Next Admin permission set and click Add.

9. Save your changes.
For more information on the available permission sets for Tableau Next, see [Tableau Next Permission Sets and Licences](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_admin_permsets_licenses.htm) and [Assign a User a Tableau Next Permission Set](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_admin_assign_tableau_permset_to_users.htm&type=5). For more information about Data Cloud Architect permissions, see [Data Cloud Standard Permission Sets](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_userpermissions.htm&type=5).
## You’re done!
Congratulations! You now have a working Salesforce org with Data Cloud and Tableau Semantics, and an admin for Tableau Next! Continue to the next step to configure Data Cloud and enable Tableau Next.

# Step 2: Configure Data Cloud and Enable Tableau Next
> [!WARNING]
>
> As of 14 October 2025, Data Cloud has been rebranded to Data 360. During this transition, you may see references to Data Cloud in our application and documentation. While the name is new, the functionality and content remains unchanged.
**Who does this step?** Salesforce Admin or users with Tableau Next Admin permission sets.
**About this step:** Tableau Next uses Data 360 to host and manage all of its data. After it’s enabled and configured, both Data 360 and Tableau Next need their permission sets given to users.
**Note:** This step only configures Data 360; it doesn’t add any data. Data is necessary to use Tableau Next and is added later in this guide.
## Enable Tableau Next in Salesforce Setup
**Why:** This step turns on Tableau Next, which is required before you can add Tableau Next permissions, features and data.
How to do it
1. In the Quick Find box in Setup, type in `Tableau Next` and then select Tableau Next Setup.
2. Turn on Tableau Next.
3. From Tableau Next, choose Administration from the bottom-left corner.
4. Click Settings.
5. Turn on the toggle for Beta Connectors.
If Tableau Next is already enabled, it’s possible that someone in your organisation has already set up Marketing Performance for Marketing Cloud.
## Assign Data 360 and Tableau Next permission sets to users
**Why:** Users need both Data 360 and Tableau Next permissions to access data in Tableau Next. The different Tableau Next permission sets map to a required Data 360 permission set and control what users can do in Tableau Next and Data 360. In this step, you’ll assign users both Tableau Next and Data 360 permission sets.
For information about the required licences for these permission sets, see [Tableau Next Permission Sets and Licences](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_admin_permsets_licenses.htm&type=5).
| Tableau Next Permission Set | Tableau Next Permission Set Description | Data 360 Permission Set Requirement |

How to do it
Before you assign permissions, make a list of users and use the table above to map out which Tableau Next permission set and corresponding Data Cloud permission set each user needs.
1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, type in `Users` and select Users.
2. Select a user and click Permission Set Assignments.
3. Click Edit Assignments.
4. Select a Tableau Next permission set for that user from the table above.
5. Select Data Cloud Architect permission set and click Add.
6. Select the Tableau Next Admin or Tableau Next Unmetered Admin permission set and click Add.
7. Save your work.
Repeat this step for each user on your list.
### Add users by permission set
If you need to assign permissions to a large number of users, you can add multiple users to a permission set at once. To do this, you need to group users by the permission sets they need in Tableau Next and Data 360. Then add those users to both the Tableau Next Platform Analyst and Data Cloud Architect permission sets.
1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, type `Permission` and select Permission Sets.
2. Select the appropriate Tableau Next Permission Set.
3. Click Manage Assignments.
4. Click Add Assignments.
5. Select one or more users by ticking the box next to their name.
6. Click Assign.
7. Perform these steps again for the same users, selecting the appropriate Data Cloud permission set.
## You’re done!
Congratulations! Now you have Data Cloud and Tableau Next in your Salesforce org and users with Data Cloud and Tableau Next permissions. You’ll add data to Data Cloud in a later step. Continue on to the next step to configure the features that make Tableau Next shine.

# Step 6: Connect, Transform and Harmonise Data in Data Cloud
> [!WARNING]
>
> As of 14 October 2025, Data Cloud has been rebranded to Data 360. During this transition, you may see references to Data Cloud in our application and documentation. While the name is new, the functionality and content remains unchanged.
**Who does this step?** Any user with a Data Cloud Architect permission set.
**About this step:** Tableau Next relies on data in Data Cloud. Before you can use all the functionality in Tableau Next, you need data to work with. However, these steps don’t need to be taken as part of setup.
**Note:** Data Cloud is a complex, powerful product in its own right. Because Data Cloud and Tableau Next can’t function without data in Data Cloud, the general steps for adding data to Data Cloud are listed. The information on this page is provided at a high level and isn’t intended to be sufficient for implementation. Refer to the more detailed documentation for complete details and steps.
### Bring in data to Data Cloud
**Why:** To get started with Data Cloud, you connect a data source. During data ingestion, data is brought into Data Cloud in its original form and stored in a data lake object (DLO).
How to do it
1. [Plan your Data Cloud Strategy](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_plan_data_strategy.htm).
2. [Connect Data](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_data_ingestion.htm).
Learn more: [Understanding Salesforce Data Terms](https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-gb/tableau_next_sf_datacloud_terms.htm)
### Set up Data Model Objects (DMOs)
**Why:** Create, view and manage data model objects (DMOs). DMOs are fundamental to Data Cloud. Familiarise yourself with the definitions, concepts and resources related to DMOs before creating or working with them.
How to do it
1. [Prepare and Model Data](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_prepare_and_model_data.htm).
2. [Create, view and manage DMOs](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_data_model_objects.htm).
## Create a semantic model
**Why:** Tableau Semantics is a new Data Cloud layer, where you define, govern and query all your business metrics. Tableau Semantics operates on top of Data Cloud’s data sources and powers all consumption experiences that source data from Data Cloud. It’s applied on top of all the data sources you connect or ingest into Data Cloud and serves as a single source of truth for all your consumption layers.
How to do it
1. In Data Cloud, on the Semantic Layer tab, click **New Model**.
2. Select **Start with a New Model** and then click **Next**.
3. Select the data objects for your semantic model.
4. Deselect any fields you don’t want to include in the semantic model.
5. Click **Next** and then enter the model information.
6. Give the model a descriptive name and an API name, and enter an optional description. You can’t change the API name after the model has been created.
7. Click **Create**.
8. After your model has been created, you can add data objects and change the definitions.
Learn more: [Create a Semantic Model in Tableau Next](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_data_sdm_create.htm&type=5)
## Enable Analytics Agent Readiness
**Why:** Optional, but required for Concierge. Perform this task to verify your model’s readiness and mark it as mature and ready for use by the Analytics Agent.
How to do it
1. In Data Cloud, on the Semantic Layer tab, select the relevant semantic model by clicking its name.
2. In the Semantic Model Builder, click the clipboard icon . The Analytics Agent Readiness screen opens.
3. Read each item on the checklist. Based on your own judgement, tick the box for each item to confirm that the semantic model meets the recommended criteria.
4. Only after all boxes have been ticked will the Enable button be activated.
5. The Semantic Model Builder displays a tool tip indicating that an Analytics Agent is allowed to answer questions based on this semantic model.
Learn more: [Enable Analytics Agent Readiness](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_agent_readiness_enable.htm)
## You’re done!
Congratulations! You’ve brought data into Data Cloud, set up a Data Model Object, and created a semantic model to add business context to your data.

How to do it
1. On the Tableau Next home page, click New Workspace.
2. Name the workspace.
3. Add a description for the workspace.
Learn more: [Analyse Data in Tableau Next Workspaces](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_workspace_about.htm)
## Connect Data to Workspaces
**Why:** Tableau Next relies on data from Data Cloud. This can either be accessing existing assets in Data Cloud, or uploading data (such as a CSV or Excel file) from Tableau Next into Data Cloud.
How to do it
1. Add an existing data asset.
1. On the workspace tab, click Add and then select Existing Asset.
2. In the Select an Object to Add window, select the assets to upload.
3. To narrow your search, filter the assets by type or enter a name in the Search box.
4. Click Select.

5. Click Show Suggestions and then review the suggestions and apply if needed. You can always turn suggestions on or off using the Suggested Relationships toggle.
6. Continue building your model by adding more data objects, calculated fields, parameters and logical views. For more information, see [Structure Data within a Semantic Model](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_data_model_builder.htm).
**Note:** If you want to use Concierge to explore metric details and dashboards with natural language, you need to Enable Analytics Agent Readiness on the semantic model that metric or dashboard is built from.
Learn more: [About Semantic Models](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_data_sdm_about_models.htm)
## Define and Add Metrics
**Why:** A metric is a business KPI that you can track over time and use to assess performance or business processes. A metric is derived from one or more measures. You can apply a sentiment to a metric (for example, up is good or bad), aggregation (for example, sum, non-cumulative, average, minimum, maximum) and other business contexts.
How to do it
1. From your workspace, open the model that you want to use for defining a metric.
2. To create a new metric, from the New dropdown, select Metrics.
3. Define the metric. For more information, see [Create a Metric for a Semantic Model in Data 360](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_metrics_create.htm).

# Tableau Next Overview
> [!WARNING]
>
> As of 14 October 2025, Data Cloud has been rebranded to Data 360. During this transition, you may see references to Data Cloud in our application and documentation. While the name is new, the functionality and content remains unchanged.
Tableau Next is a flexible, API-first analytics platform built with a unified data layer and trusted semantics, and it integrates Salesforce with Agentforce. Curious about how Tableau Next fits with Tableau? See [Tableau's Products and Features](https://help.tableau.com/v0.0/tableau-next/en-gb/tableau_next_tableau_product_overview.htm).
**Tip:** For details about Tableau Next, check out [Tableau Next documentation](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua.htm&type=5) in the Salesforce Help Centre.
Tableau Next is structured around the concept of [workspaces](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_workspace.htm&type=5) as organisational units for [assets](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_workspace_asset.htm&type=5). Assets are the ‘pieces’ used in analytics, starting with data, which is enriched with semantics, then analysed with vizzes and metrics and finally presented in dashboards.
Types of assets and where they're created and located:
- **[Data](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_data_add.htm&type=5)** is always a Data 360 object: a DMO, DLO, CIO or CSV stored as a DLO. For more information, see [Essential data terms and concepts](https://help.tableau.com/v0.0/tableau-next/en-gb/tableau_next_sf_datacloud_terms.htm#data-terms-essentials).
- **[Semantic models](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.semantics.htm&type=5)** can be created in Data 360 or Tableau Next. They are created with the Semantic Model Builder.
- **[Metrics](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_data_sdm_about_metrics.htm&type=5)** are created from a semantic model, either in Data 360 or Tableau Next.
- **[Vizzes](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_create_viz.htm&type=5)** are created in Tableau Next. Vizzes are created with the Visualisation Builder.
- **[Dashboards](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_create_dashboard.htm&type=5)** are created in Tableau Next. Dashboards are created with the Dashboard Builder.

Analysis isn't useful until it's seen and acted on. [Sharing and embedding](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_embed.htm&type=5) Tableau Next assets happens in the flow of work, including in [Slack](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_metric_slack_share.htm). And with [Agentforce](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_metric_questions.htm&type=5) baked in, an agent helping you create or consume analysis is at your fingertips.
## Workspaces to organise, build and share your analytic assets
Workspaces can contain these assets directly or contain references to an asset. Assets can be located in the workspace itself, in another workspace, or in Data 360. A reference to an asset is a link to an asset that is located outside the workspace. The list of assets in a workspace is a list of possible pieces that can be used together for an analysis.

As a general rule, create a new workspace whenever you're working on a discrete project that needs its own collection of assets. If the same assets are needed for related analysis, the same workspace can be used. When the analysis question is different – even if some of the same assets might be relevant – it can be useful to make a different workspace.
Assets must live in a single workspace. They can be used across multiple workspaces by adding a reference to an existing asset. The asset isn't copied into the other workspace when it's added as a reference; it's simply bookmarked there for easy access.
## Types of assets in workspaces
**Data** can be in Data 360 or may be external and referenced by a Data 360 object. A Tableau Next workspace simply holds the connection information to the data.
- Tableau Next can connect to DMOs (data model objects), DLOs (data lake objects) and CIOs (calculated insight objects) from Data 360.
- A CSV file can be connected to a Tableau Next workspace and the data uploaded and stored in Data 360 as a DLO.
For a deeper dive into data in the context of Tableau and Tableau Next, see [Essential data terms and concepts](https://help.tableau.com/v0.0/tableau-next/en-gb/tableau_next_sf_datacloud_terms.htm#data-terms-essentials).
**Semantic models** form the semantic layer and consist of a data model (which DMOs to use and how they relate to each other) and business definitions on the data (field names, aggregations, calculations and so on). At the core, semantics add meaning by providing context to the raw data. Semantic models are built using the Semantic Model Builder, which is found in Tableau Next and Data 360. The technology that powers the semantic models is Tableau Semantics, which also controls the queries necessary for analytics.
For a close look into semantic models in the context of Tableau and Tableau Next, see [Essentials of data semantics](https://help.tableau.com/v0.0/tableau-next/en-gb/tableau_next_sf_datacloud_terms.htm#semantics-essentials).
**Metrics** are built on semantic models in Tableau Next or [Data 360](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_metrics_create.htm&type=5) and are a streamlined way to track changes to a measure over time. Metrics can be grouped and filtered by different dimensions. Unlike vizzes, metrics have a consistent format to provide at-a-glance insights into key data trends.
**Vizzes** are the units of analysis. A viz is a single chart or graph, built with a drag and drop Visualisation Builder. For example, these can be bar charts, line graphs or scatter plots.
**Dashboards** can contain metrics from Tableau Next or Data 360, vizzes from Tableau Next and dashboard-specific widgets such as text, filters and buttons. Dashboards can also pull in actions that are driven by Salesforce Flows. Because you can format a dashboard and add more context than you can with a viz, most analytics consumed by business users should be dashboards rather than vizzes.
## Work with Tableau Next
### Your data and semantics where you are
As [Tableau Next and Tableau](https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-gb/tableau_next_tableau_product_overview.htm) continue to build stronger integrations, we’re adding the ability to do analysis where you want regardless of where your data lives.
Why would you have data in one place and want to do analysis in another? You might want to do analysis in an environment that is distinct from where your data is for any number of reasons:
- You want to work in a more familiar environment.
- You need to use functionality only available in a specific platform.
- You want to do the analysis where your consumers are.
### Interoperability
Tableau Cloud, Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop have a [Tableau Semantics connector](https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-gb/examples_tableau_semantics.htm) for accessing and using semantic models from Tableau Semantics.
Tableau Next has the ability to create a [semantic model from a published data source (PDS)](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_data_models_create_from_pds.htm&type=5) in a Tableau Cloud site.
- **Note**: To create a semantic model from a published data source, there needs to be a link between the Salesforce user and a Tableau Cloud user. See [Set Up Trust Between Salesforce and Tableau](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_data_models_pds_trust.htm&type=5) in the Salesforce Help for more information.
### Agentforce for Analytics
Agentforce is an integral part of Tableau Next. With [Agentforce Tableau](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_metric_analytics_qa.htm&type=5), you can turn data into insights faster with Data Pro, Concierge and Inspector.
### Tableau Next setup for the site admin
Tableau Next is deeply integrated with Data 360. Getting analysts and analytics consumers into Tableau Next involves several steps:
1. Set up Data 360 for Tableau Next
2. Set up Tableau Semantics
3. Create the Tableau Next admin
4. Enable Tableau Next
5. Assign a user the Tableau Next permission set
For more information, see [Admin: Set Up Tableau Next](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_admin.htm&type=5) in the Tableau Next Help or the [Tableau Next Setup Guide](https://help.tableau.com/v0.0/tableau-next/en-gb/tableau_next_setup_guide.htm) in the Tableau Help.

# Tableau Next Setup Guide
> [!WARNING]
>
> As of 14 October 2025, Data Cloud has been rebranded to Data 360. During this transition, you may see references to Data Cloud in our application and documentation. While the name is new, the functionality and content remains unchanged.
This is a quickstart guide to Tableau Next setup for someone with no Salesforce experience or who hasn’t created a Salesforce org. Tableau Next is a flexible, agentic analytics platform built in Salesforce and integrated with a unified data layer, trusted semantics and Salesforce with Agentforce. Because Tableau Next uses the power of Data Cloud and AI for analysis, you need to set them up inside a Salesforce org before you and others on your team can use Tableau Next.
**Who this guide is for:** This guide assumes one person will walk through all the setup steps, acting as a Salesforce Admin, Data Cloud Architect and Tableau Next Admin. But you can choose to assign these roles to different people, too.
**What this guide is for**: The goal of this guide is to walk a designated person through the **minimum** required setup steps for Tableau Next. If a step doesn’t work or you need more information, you can find more in-depth task and conceptual information in the help links for each step.
**What this guide is not:** This guide does not go into all of the planning and setup steps possible when implementing a Salesforce org, Data Cloud, Tableau Semantics or AI in Salesforce. Your [Salesforce rollout strategy](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.setup_overview.htm&type=5) and [Data Cloud strategy](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=data.c360_a_plan_data_strategy.htm&type=5) require planning to get the most out of them.
After you go through these steps to start working in Tableau Next, you can take further CRM implementation steps that work best for your business.

# Tableau's Products and Features
Tableau as a term is now used in the Salesforce ecosystem to refer to analytics. The products historically known as _Tableau_ are referred to in this topic as _Tableau by Tableau_. This distinguishes those products and features from _Tableau Next_, the Salesforce analytics platform integrated with Data Cloud, and _Tableau Semantics_, the semantic layer of Data 360 and Tableau Next.
## Tableau on the Salesforce platform
There are analytics products developed inside Salesforce that use Tableau branding. These products are built on a Salesforce code base and are native to the Salesforce CRM ecosystem.

# Understanding Salesforce and Data Cloud Terms
> [!WARNING]
>
> As of 14 October 2025, Data Cloud has been rebranded to Data 360. During this transition, you may see references to Data Cloud in our application and documentation. While the name is new, the functionality and content remains unchanged.
As [Tableau Next and Tableau](https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-gb/tableau_next_tableau_product_overview.htm) continue to build stronger integrations, we’re adding the ability to do analysis where you want regardless of where your data lives. This means Tableau and Data 360 terminology and philosophies are beginning to touch more. Users who are familiar with one ecosystem may find the other ecosystem confusing or alien, but at the end of the day it's all data.
This topic is intended to help orientate users regardless of which system they're used to or find themselves working in.
## Essential data terms and concepts
There are plenty of words to describe data. In the most generic sense, a **data set** is the collection of data you're working with.
- A **database** is the technology platform that actually holds the data, such as Amazon Redshift, Firebird, Google Sheets or Oracle.
- Data is often stored as a **table** of data. In a database, there may be multiple tables or views. In Excel or Google Sheets, each sheet tab is a table. In a CSV file, the entire file is the table.
- If the data you need is spread across multiple tables, they need to be connected in a **data model**. A data model is the abstract representation of how tables are connected to each other (the data objects and how they relate).
## Data in Salesforce
In Data 360, data is broken down into different concepts.
| Data Type | Description |
|---|
| Data stream | The connection information, such as original source (S3, Amazon, Google BigQuery, etc.), as well as which fields are brought in, which field is the primary key, how often the data is refreshed, etc. |
| Data lake object (DLO) | Data ingested into Data 360 or referenced from an external system such as Snowflake gets stored in a DLO. The data stored in a DLO is cleansed, transformed and prepped for computation and analysis. Each table of data is its own DLO. |
| Data model object (DMO) | A Data 360 object that describes the structure and schema of data stored in one or more data lake objects. A DMO is a table of data, but it might come from one or more DLOs. The DMO takes the DLO data and maps it into a reliable format. Identity resolution rulesets and other templatised formatting is applied in the DMO. There are standard and custom DMOs. The data mapping from a DLO to a DMO and the templatised nature of most DMOs is the harmonisation power of Data 360. |
| Calculated insight object (CIO) | A data model object created after a calculated insight is processed. Calculated insights help build cube-style metrics with measures and dimensions on Data 360 data. You can connect to an existing CIO in Data 360 and add it as a data asset in your workspace. |
| Comma-separated value (CSV) | A text file that stores data in a table-like format. CSV files are commonly used to move data between applications and programs. For Tableau Next: A CSV file can be brought into a Tableau Next workspace and the data uploaded and stored in Data 360 as a DLO. |
### An aside on Salesforce Data Objects for the Tableau audience
The data stream is the connection information.
The DLO is the raw dump of data from the data stream. Each DLO is a single table.
A DMO has no direct analogue in Tableau. A DMO can be mapped from multiple DLOs (similar to a ‘view’ in a database) and each DMO is a single table.
A CIO has no analogue in Tableau, where calculations are simply fields in the data source like any other.
## Data in Tableau
A Tableau [Data Source](https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-gb/publish_datasources_about.htm) consists of database connection information, the data model, info about how to access the data (access credentials, etc.) or refresh it, semantic information and possibly even the data itself. The two main UI elements for creating and editing a data source are the data source tab and the Data pane.
**Data source tab:** The data source tab is where the data connections are established to the underlying database or files and the data model is built by combining tables from one or more databases into a single data source using [relationships, joins and unions](https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-gb/datasource_plan.htm#methods-of-combining-data). If the data is left in its original database, it's a live connection. A copy of the data can also be brought into Tableau itself as an extract that can be refreshed if desired.
**Data Pane:** The Data pane is where semantic information is captured, including field names, member aliases, hierarchies, groups, sets, calculations, default aggregations and colours, and field descriptions.
**Data source:** Together, the modifications made in the data source tab and the data pane form the _data source_. A data source can be a published asset, a file or contained within the workbook it was created in.
- A published data source (PDS) is a stand-alone asset on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server.
- Locally, you can also have file-based versions of a Tableau data source:
- `.tds` is the file extension for a Tableau Data Source, which contains the non-data information (connection and semantics alone).
- `.tdsx` is the file extension for a packaged Tableau Data Source, which contains the non-data information as well as the data itself.
- `.hyper` is the file extension for an extract (previously `.tde`), which contains a copy of the data (the data itself).
**Note**: A published data source is the closest equivalent Tableau has to a semantic layer or semantic model.
### An aside on Tableau data for the Salesforce audience
Tableau works with data from a wide variety of databases and technologies, both local and cloud-based. Because data isn't coming from a Salesforce cloud with all the specific data objects that implies, there's a lot of flexibility in how to model and format data and no real concept of templatised data formats.
Standardisation and semantic models are mostly captured with published data sources (PDS).

## Essentials of data semantics
- **Data** is the raw facts (numbers, observations and measurements).
- **Information** is the interpretation of that data or the knowledge that comes from processing and understanding the data.
- **Semantics** is the stepping stone between the underlying data and the information that comes out of it.
The term comes from the linguistic concept of semantics vs syntax. Syntax is how you say something; semantics is what it means. That concept of _semantics is what it means_ carries through to semantics in the context of data. Semantics includes things like how tables are combined in the data model, information about the fields or columns of data and how they might interact with each other, additional information such as default aggregation and calculations performed on top of the raw data.
A data set might have all the information you need, but [if you can't figure out how to get meaning out of it, it's useless](https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-gb/find_good_datasets.htm#4-a-good-data-set-has-metadata-or-a-data-dictionary). It needs semantics to be useful.
The business use case can't be separated from the details of semantics. Semantics is the description of the data or its business context. Semantics can be broken down into categories such as data modelling; field metadata and descriptions; default aggregations; hierarchies, groups and sets; and calculations.
Some examples:
- **Data modelling**
- How the tables of data could connect to each other. Should the four quarterly sales tables be unioned? Should the doctor table be directly related to the patients table, or should they both be related to the appointments table?
- **Field metadata** (field name, data type, member aliases)
- Is _Name_ the name of an account or a contact?
- Is _Discount_ a boolean field for whether or not a discount is applied, a string field of the discount type or a discrete measurement of the discount amount?
- **Field descriptions**
- Such as a comment that _APR_ for this data set is Adjusted Pitching Runs, not Annual Percentage Return, and it's calculated as `APR = L * IP - R / pf(P)` where L: Average number of runs per inning pitched in the league, IP: Innings Pitched, R: Runs Allowed, pf(P): park factor for the player's home park P.
- **Default aggregations**
- Should Listings be aggregated as a COUNT (counting every instance) or COUNTD (counting only unique values)?
- Should the default aggregation of a measure be SUM or AVG?
- **Hierarchies, sets, groups**
- In a collection of departments at a university, the engineering department may be its own college, where the departments of history, literature, philosophy and political science may all form the college of Liberal Arts.
- **Calculations**
- Fields that are derived from fields that exist natively in the data but need to be manipulated or combined, such as defining a stale support case as one that's been open for ten days for a standard account but only two days for a premium account.
## Semantics in Tableau and Tableau Semantics
Without a reusable semantic layer, data models, semantic definitions and calculated fields may be made as one-offs over and over again, introducing inefficiencies and the potential for error or misalignment.
### Semantics in Tableau
Semantics isn't anything new to the Tableau audience. It's just been part of the data source – especially a published data source (PDS). The published data source is where you control the semantic definitions of your data.
Because of Tableau's philosophy of the [cycle of visual analytics](https://help.tableau.com/current/blueprint/en-gb/bp_cycle_of_visual_analysis.htm), semantics historically hasn't been abstracted out into a distinct layer. The authoring environment is the place where the data model (the data source tab) and semantics (the Data pane) are developed together.
### Tableau Semantics
[Tableau Semantics](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.semantics.htm&type=5) takes the approach of separating semantics into a distinct layer from analysis so that semantic models can be built once and used across a variety of analyses or even products. Tableau Semantics fits into the Data 360 and Tableau Next environments as the step between data and analysis. The unit of the semantic layer is a _semantic model_. The semantic model contains both the data model and semantic definitions for the data. In Tableau Semantics, the Semantic Model Builder is the UI for creating a semantic model. These semantic models can be built in Data 360 or Tableau Next.
## Interoperability
With the [Tableau Semantics connector](https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-gb/examples_tableau_semantics.htm) for Tableau, you can do analysis in Tableau using a semantic model from Tableau Next. Or, by creating a [semantic model from a published data source (PDS)](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_data_models_create_from_pds.htm&type=5), you can do analysis in Tableau Next using a data source from Tableau.
