# Apache Impala

This article describes how to connect Tableau to open source Apache Impala and set up the data source.

## Before you begin

Before you begin, gather this connection information:

- Name of the server that hosts the database you want to connect to and the port number
- Authentication:

    - None
    - LDAP
    - Integrated (Kerberos)
- Username and password depending on the authentication method you choose
- Transport Mode
- Database
- Thrift protocol version
- Are you connecting to an SSL server?

### Driver required

This connector requires a driver to talk to the database. If the driver is not installed on your computer, Tableau displays a message in the connection dialog box with a link to the [Driver Download](https://www.tableau.com/en-gb/support/drivers) page where you can find driver links and installation instructions.

## Make the connection and set up the data source

1. Start Tableau and under Connect, select Apache Impala. For a complete list of data connections, select More under To a Server. Then do the following:

    1. Enter the **Server** name and **Port**.
    2. Select an **Authentication** method and enter a username and password if prompted.
    3. Select a **Transport Mode**
    4. (Optional) Enter a **database** to connect to.
    5. Set **Use SSL** to **True** if SSL is required.
    6. (Optional) Specify the SSL Server Cert in full PEM format or provide a local file path to the certificate. If not specified, any certificate trusted by the machine is accepted.
    7. Select a Thrift **Protocol Version**.
    8. Select **Sign In**.

**Note:** If Tableau can’t make the connection, verify that your credentials are correct. If you still can’t connect, contact your database or network administrator.
2. On the data source page, do the following:

    1. (Optional) Select the data source name at the top of the page, and then enter a unique data source name.
    2. From the Database drop-down list, select a database.
    3. Under Table, select a table or use the search field to search for a table by name.
    4. Drag a table to the canvas, and then select the sheet tab to start your analysis.
