# Where's the installer?

This topic describes how to find and download the installers for Tableau Desktop, Tableau Desktop Public Edition, Tableau Prep Builder, and Tableau Reader.

## Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder installers

You can find the Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder installers on the [Product Downloads](http://www.tableau.com/support/esdalt) page, and if you are a Tableau Customer, on the [Customer Portal](http://customer.tableau.com/) page.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> 
>  Tableau products are not always released at the same time. When installing a new version Tableau Desktop, make sure it's compatible with Tableau Server. For example, a new release of Tableau Desktop might be available, but a compatible version of Tableau Server might not be available for several months. See [Finding and Resolving Compatibility Issues](https://help.tableau.com/current/desktopdeploy/en-us/desktop_deploy_compatibility.htm).

### Product Downloads

The _Product Downloads_ page requires a Tableau.com account to access the installers. You can also find all available versions. After you download and install the product, you will need to activate the product.

**Note:** Beginning with version 2026.1.0, use the Tableau Desktop installer for both Tableau Desktop Professional Edition and Tableau Desktop Free Edition.

1. Go to the [Product Downloads](http://www.tableau.com/support/esdalt) page and select Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder from the list on the left side of the page.
2. Select the version you want to install.

3. In the Download Files section of the page, select the installer for your operating system to download it.

### Tableau Customer Portal

The Tableau Customer Portal is managed by your internal Tableau Portal Administrator or by someone in your IT department. For more information, see [Getting Started with the Customer Portal](https://kb.tableau.com/articles/howto/getting-started-with-the-customer-portal?lang=en-gb).

1. As a Customer Portal user, go to the [Customer Portal.](http://customer.tableau.com/)
2. Under Quick Links, select Product Downloads.
3. Select the appropriate link to download the installer for your product and operating system.

## Tableau Desktop Public Edition installer

Tableau Public is a platform where you can explore and share data visualizations online. Tableau Desktop Public Edition is a free data visualization tool that you can use to publish to Tableau Public. You can also post to Tableau Public from Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, or Tableau Cloud.

To get the Tableau Desktop Public Edition installer:

1. Go to [Tableau Public.](https://www.tableau.com/products/public/download)
2. Select DOWNLOAD THE APP.
3. Fill out the registration form, then select DOWNLOAD THE APP on the form.

To access the Tableau Public environment, you will need to create a profile. You can post to Tableau Public from Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, or Tableau Cloud.

## Tableau Reader installer

Tableau Reader is a free desktop application that you can use to open and interact with data visualizations built in Tableau Desktop. As an alternative, you can use the Tableau Viewer role. For more information, see [Tableau Viewer vs. Tableau Reader](https://www.tableau.com/products/viewer-vs-reader).

To get the Tableau Reader installer:

1. Go to [Tableau Reader](https://www.tableau.com/products/reader/download).
2. Select DOWNLOAD THE APP.  
    The download begins automatically.
