# Best Practices for Installing Tableau Server on Microsoft Azure

## This is archived content

Deployments on public clouds continue to be supported but the content for third-party public cloud deployments is no longer updated.

For the latest Tableau Server deployment content, see the [Deploy](https://help.tableau.com/current/server/en-gb/install.htm) section of Tableau Server help.

For those customers who have access, we recommend Tableau Cloud. For more details, see:

- [Tableau Cloud Manual Migration Guide](https://help.tableau.com/current/guides/migration/en-gb/emg_intro.htm)
- [Tableau Cloud Trial for Admin](https://help.tableau.com/current/server-linux/en-gb/install.htm)
- [Tableau Cloud: Get Started for Admin](https://www.tableau.com/en-gb/learn/get-started/online-admin)

## Introduction

The following best practices make installing Tableau Server in the cloud a better experience.

- Read the Tableau Server [Plan Your Deployment](https://help.tableau.com/current/server/en-gb/plan.htm) section.
- Read [What You Need Before You Begin](https://help.tableau.com/current/server/en-gb/ts_azure_prerequisites.htm).
- Read the Tableau Server [Security Hardening Checklist](https://help.tableau.com/current/server/en-gb/security_harden.htm).
- If you’re new to the cloud, use the [Azure free tier](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/free/) to get familiar with working in the cloud before you deploy Tableau Server on Microsoft Azure.
- Read about and understand [network topology](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/azure/architecture/reference-architectures/hybrid-networking/) on Microsoft Azure and how to architect it.

## Keeping Costs Down

Microsoft Azure offers cloud-based services on a pay-as-you-go basis. Costs are determined by the services you run and amount of time you use them. Different combinations of instance types and sizes have different costs. For more information about services pricing, see [Azure pricing](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-au/pricing/calculator/). You can estimate your total monthly costs using the [Microsoft Azure Pricing Calculator](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-au/pricing/calculator/). You can also compare on-premises vs the cloud using the [Microsoft Azure Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Calculator](http://tco.microsoft.com/).

To help monitor and control usage costs on an ongoing basis, you can set up billing alerts for Microsoft Azure to alert you when your monthly Microsoft Azure costs reach your predefined spending threshold. For more information, see [Set up billing or credit alerts for your Microsoft Azure subscriptions](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/azure/billing/billing-set-up-alerts) at the Microsoft Azure website.
