# mulesoft Snowflake Connector - Full Documentation --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.4 is-latest-version: true --- # Configuring FIPS 140-3 for Snowflake Connector > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt Snowflake Connector supports FIPS 140-3 compliant cryptographic operations through integration with BouncyCastle FIPS (BCFIPS) security provider. Learn how to configure the connector for FIPS-compliant environments. ## Before You Begin Make sure you meet these prerequisites for the configuration: - Mule Runtime 4.10.0 or later - Snowflake Connector version 1.4.0 or later - BouncyCastle FIPS libraries v2 or later - Java 17 or later with FIPS-capable JVM - Snowflake JDBC Driver - FIPS Edition (required for FIPS environments) > [!WARNING] FIPS-Certified JDBC driver required: > > Snowflake provides a separate FIPS-certified JDBC driver specifically designed for FIPS 140-3 > compliant environments. If you operate in a FIPS environment, you must use the FIPS-certified > driver instead of the standard Snowflake JDBC driver. > > - Standard driver > `snowflake-jdbc-.jar` (for non-FIPS environments) > > - FIPS driver > `snowflake-jdbc-fips-.jar` (for FIPS environments) > > The FIPS driver is built with FIPS-certified cryptographic libraries and is validated for use in > regulated environments. Using the standard driver in a FIPS environment doesn’t meet compliance > requirements. > > For more information on obtaining the FIPS-certified driver, see the > [Snowflake JDBC Driver documentation](https://docs.snowflake.com/en/developer-guide/jdbc/jdbc). ## Understanding FIPS Mode Detection Snowflake Connector automatically detects FIPS mode by checking the `mule.security.model` system property. When this property is set to a value starting with `fips140` (for example, `fips140-3`), the connector operates in FIPS mode with enhanced security controls. Example: ```bash -Dmule.security.model=fips140-3 ``` ## Configure BCFIPS with the Snowflake Connector Configure BCFIPS using one of these options: - [Configure BCFIPS in Java Security](#configure-bcfips-in-java-security) - [Enable Auto-Registration](#enable-auto-registration) > [!NOTE] FIPS approved algorithms only: > > Regardless of which configuration option you choose, you must configure the system property > `org.bouncycastle.fips.approved_only=true` to ensure that the BCFIPS security provider operates > exclusively with FIPS-approved algorithms. > > The connector doesn’t set this property automatically. This is a JVM-wide configuration that > affects all applications and processes running in the JVM. The system administrator must set this > property manually or through your Mule runtime configuration. > > Example: > > ```bash > -Dorg.bouncycastle.fips.approved_only=true > ``` > > Without this property, BCFIPS may allow non-FIPS-approved algorithms, which could violate > compliance requirements in regulated environments. ### Configure BCFIPS in Java Security (Recommended) Use this option for production environments to: - Manage security configuration from a central location - Apply consistently across all applications - Avoid runtime modifications to security infrastructure - Follow enterprise security governance practices Follow these steps: 1. Locate your Java security configuration file: $JAVA\_HOME/jre/lib/security/java.security 2. Add the BCFIPS provider to the security provider list. Insert it at an appropriate position (typically position 1 or 2): ```properties security.provider.1=org.bouncycastle.jcajce.provider.BouncyCastleFipsProvider security.provider.2=sun.security.provider.Sun # ... other providers ``` 3. Make sure the BCFIPS JAR is available in the JVM classpath or the Mule application’s shared libraries. 4. Restart your Mule runtime instance. ### Enable Auto-Registration Use this option for environments where modifying `java.security` is not feasible, the connector can automatically register BCFIPS at runtime. > [!WARNING] Important security considerations: > > - Modifies the JVM-wide security provider configuration > > - May conflict with existing security providers > > - Requires explicit approval from your security or compliance team > > - Should only be used when > [configuring BCFIPS in Java Security](#configure-bcfips-in-java-security) is not possible Follow these steps: 1. Set the auto-registration system property: ```bash -Dmule.snowflake.fips.bcfips.autoregister=true ``` 2. Make sure FIPS mode is enabled: ```bash -Dmule.security.model=fips140-3 ``` 3. The connector automatically registers BCFIPS when establishing the first connection. Example Mule runtime startup: ```bash java -Dmule.security.model=fips140-3 \ -Dmule.snowflake.fips.bcfips.autoregister=true \ -Dorg.bouncycastle.fips.approved_only=true \ -jar mule-standalone.jar ``` ## Understanding Standard (Non-FIPS) Mode In standard mode (when `mule.security.model` isn’t set or doesn’t start with `fips140`), the connector automatically handles BCFIPS registration without requiring additional configuration. This ensures seamless operation for non-regulated environments. ## System Properties Reference

This property isn’t set by the connector and the system administrator > must configure it manually. ## Migrate Existing Deployments You need to assess the current configuration and choose the appropriate configuration method. ### Non-FIPS Environments No action required. The connector maintains full backward compatibility and automatically handles BCFIPS registration. ### For FIPS Environments 1. Assess the current configuration: - Verify if BCFIPS is already configured in `java.security` - Check for existing BouncyCastle provider registrations - Identify the Snowflake JDBC driver in use (standard versus FIPS-certified) 2. Choose the configuration method: - Recommended: [Configure BCFIPS in `java.security`](#configure-bcfips-in-java-security) - Alternative: [Enable auto-registration](#enable-auto-registration) 3. Configure FIPS-certified components: - Replace standard Snowflake JDBC driver with FIPS-certified driver (`snowflake-jdbc-fips`) - Make sure BouncyCastle FIPS libraries version 2.x are available 4. Update system properties: - Add `-Dmule.security.model=fips140-3` (enables FIPS mode detection) - Add `-Dorg.bouncycastle.fips.approved_only=true` (Required for FIPS compliance) - If using auto-registration, add `-Dmule.snowflake.fips.bcfips.autoregister=true` 5. Test in Non-Production: - Deploy to development or staging environment - Verify connectivity and operations - Review logs for any security-related warnings 6. Production deployment: - Schedule maintenance window - Deploy configuration changes - Monitor logs for successful FIPS initialization - Validate all Snowflake operations ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Using Anypoint Studio to Configure Snowflake Connector](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-studio) - [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-reference) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com) --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.3 --- # Snowflake Connector 1.3 > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt Anypoint Connector for Snowflake (Snowflake Connector) enables you to connect with your Snowflake instance to load data, run queries in Snowflake tables, and sync data with external business applications. For information about compatibility and fixed issues, see the Snowflake Connector Release Notes. ## Before You Begin To use this connector, you must be familiar with: - The Snowflake API - Anypoint Connectors - Mule runtime engine (Mule) - Elements and global elements in a Mule flow - How to create a Mule app using Anypoint Studio Before creating an app, you must have: - Credentials to access the Snowflake target resource - Anypoint Platform - Anypoint Studio version 7.5 or later ## Common Use Cases for the Connector These are some common use cases for Snowflake Connector: - Load bulk or continuous data into your Snowflake instance. - Run queries to insert, delete, update, and merge data in Snowflake tables. - Sync data: - Keep unstructured data (files) in an external data location in sync with unstructured data in Snowflake, when the external data location is the source of truth. - Keep unstructured data (files) in an external data location in sync with unstructured data in Snowflake, when Snowflake is the source of truth. - Keep structured data (tables) in an external data location in sync with Snowflake (in tables), when the external data location is the source of truth. - Keep structured data (tables) in an external data location in sync with Snowflake (in tables), when Snowflake is the source of truth. ## Connection Types Use one of the following Snowflake connection types: - Key-pair Snowflake Connection Enables you to connect to Snowflake using encrypted or unencrypted private keys. - Basic Snowflake Connection (To be deprecated) Enables you to connect to Snowflake via user and password. For information about configuring authentication types, see [Using Anypoint Studio to Configure Snowflake Connector](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/1.3/snowflake-connector-studio). ## Next Step After you complete the prerequisites, you are ready to create an app and configure the connector using [Anypoint Studio](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/1.3/snowflake-connector-studio). ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Use Exchange to Discover Connectors, Templates, and Examples](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/intro-use-exchange) - [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/1.3/snowflake-connector-reference) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com) --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.3 --- # Snowflake Connector 1.3 - XML and Maven Support > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt Although you can manually code a Mule app in XML, it is more efficient to use Anypoint Studio: - If you manually code a Mule runtime engine (Mule) app in XML either from the Anypoint Studio XML editor or from a text editor, you can access the connector from your app by adding reference statements to both your XML Mule flow and the Apache Maven `pom.xml` file. - If you add the connector in Studio, Studio automatically populates the XML code with the connector’s namespace and schema location and it also adds a dependency to the `pom.xml` file. ## Add a Namespace for the Connector Paste the following code inside the `mule` tag of the header of your configuration XML: ```xml http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/snowflake http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/snowflake/current/mule-snowflake.xsd ``` This example shows how the namespace statements are placed in the XML: ```xml ``` ## Add a POM File Dependency The Apache Maven `pom.xml` file generated by Anypoint Studio contains dependencies for a Mule app. When you code a Mule app manually, include this XML snippet in your `pom.xml` file to enable access to this connector: ```xml com.mulesoft.connectors mule4-snowflake-connector x.x.x mule-plugin ``` Replace `` with the version that corresponds to the connector you are using. To obtain the most up-to-date `pom.xml` file information: 1. Go to [Anypoint Exchange](https://www.mulesoft.com/exchange/). 2. In Exchange, click **Login** and supply your Anypoint Platform username and password. 3. In Exchange, search for `snowflake`. 4. Select the connector. 5. Click **Dependency Snippets** near the upper right of the screen. ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com) --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.3 --- # Snowflake Connector 1.3 Examples > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt The following example returns all rows of a table based on a watermark. This example uses variables for some field values. You can either: - Replace the variables with their values in the code. - Provide the values for each variable in a properties file and then refer to that file from the connector configuration. If you don’t know how to use a properties file, refer to [Configuring Property Placeholders](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/latest/mule-app-properties-to-configure). ### Repeatable In Memory Iterable
FieldTypeDescriptionDefault ValueRequired

Initial Buffer Size

Number

The number of instances to initially keep in memory to consume the stream and provide random access to it. If the stream contains more data than can fit into this buffer, then the buffer expands according to the bufferSizeIncrement attribute, with an upper limit of maxInMemorySize. Default value is 100 instances.

Buffer Size Increment

Number

This is by how much the buffer size expands if it exceeds its initial size. Setting a value of zero or lower means that the buffer should not expand, meaning that a STREAM_MAXIMUM_SIZE_EXCEEDED error is raised when the buffer gets full. Default value is 100 instances.

Max Buffer Size

Number

The maximum amount of memory to use. If more than that is used then a STREAM_MAXIMUM_SIZE_EXCEEDED error is raised. A value lower than or equal to zero means no limit.

### Repeatable File Store Iterable
FieldTypeDescriptionDefault ValueRequired

For information about configuring authentication types, see [Using Anypoint Studio to Configure Snowflake Connector](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-studio). ## Next Step After you complete the prerequisites, you are ready to create an app and configure the connector using [Anypoint Studio](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-studio). ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Use Exchange to Discover Connectors, Templates, and Examples](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/intro-use-exchange) - [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-reference) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com) --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.4 is-latest-version: true --- # Snowflake Connector 1.4 - XML and Maven Support > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt Although you can manually code a Mule app in XML, it is more efficient to use Anypoint Studio: - If you manually code a Mule runtime engine (Mule) app in XML either from the Anypoint Studio XML editor or from a text editor, you can access the connector from your app by adding reference statements to both your XML Mule flow and the Apache Maven `pom.xml` file. ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com) --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.4 is-latest-version: true --- # Snowflake Connector 1.4 Examples > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt The following example returns all rows of a table based on a watermark. Before you try the examples, access Anypoint Studio (Studio) and verify that the **Mule Palette** view displays entries for Snowflake Connector. If not, follow the instructions in [Add the Connector to Your Mule Project](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-studio#add-connector-to-project). ## Return All Rows of a Table This example shows how to use the **On Table Row** source to return rows that contain columns with a greater watermark value than that of the last watermark processed. The following screenshot shows the app flow for this example: ![Studio Flow for the On Table Row source](/mulesoft/current/en-us/snowflake-connector/latest/_images/listener-flow.png) ### Add the On Table Row Source The **On Table Row** source selects from a table at a regular interval and generates one message per obtained row. 1. In the **Mule Palette** view, select **Snowflake** and drag the **On Table Row** source to the canvas. 2. In the Search properties window, click **+** next to the **Connector configuration** field to add a global element. 3. Enter the following values:

--- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.3 --- # Using Anypoint Studio to Configure Snowflake Connector 1.3 > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt Anypoint Studio (Studio) editors help you design and update your Mule applications, properties, and configuration files. To add and configure a connector in Studio: 1. [Create a Mule project](#create-mule-project). 2. [Add the connector to your Mule project](#add-connector-to-project). 3. [Configure a source for the connector’s flow](#configure-source). 4. [Add a connector operation to the flow](#add-connector-operation). 5. [Configure a global element for the connector](#configure-global-element). 6. [Configure the other connector fields](#configure-other-fields). When you run the connector, you can view the app log to check for problems in real time, as described in [View the App Log](#view-app-log). If you are new to configuring connectors in Studio, see [Using Anypoint Studio to Configure a Connector](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/intro-config-use-studio). If, after reading this topic, you need additional information about the connector fields, see the [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/1.3/snowflake-connector-reference). ## Create a Mule Project In Studio, create a new Mule project in which to add and configure the connector: 1. In Studio, select **File > New > Mule Project**. 2. Enter a name for your Mule project and click **Finish**. ## Add the Connector to Your Mule Project Add Snowflake Connector to your Mule project to automatically populate the XML code with the connector’s namespace and schema location and add the required dependencies to the project’s `pom.xml` file: 1. In **Mule Palette**, click **(X) Search in Exchange**. 2. In **Add Dependencies to Project**, type `snowflake` in the search field. 3. Click **Snowflake Connector** in **Available modules**. 4. Click **Add**. 5. Click **Finish**. Adding a connector to a Mule project in Studio does not make that connector available to other projects in your Studio workspace. ## Configure a Source A source initiates a flow when a specified condition is met. You can configure one of these sources to use with Snowflake Connector: - Snowflake > On Table Row Initiates a flow by selecting from a table at a regular interval and generating one message per obtained row - HTTP Listener Initiates a flow each time it receives a request on the configured host and port - Scheduler Initiates a flow when a time-based condition is met For example, to configure an **On Table Row** source, follow these steps: 1. In **Mule Palette**, select **Snowflake > On Table Row**. 2. Drag **On Table Row** to the Studio canvas. 3. On the **On Table Row** configuration screen, optionally change the value of **Display Name**. 4. Click **+** next to **Connector configuration** to configure a global element that can be used by all instances of the **On Table Row** source in the app. 5. On the **Snowflake Config** window, for **Required Libraries**, add the required Snowflake JDBC driver by selecting **Configure > Add recommended libraries** or **Configure > Add Maven dependency** and adding the artifact ID `snowflake-jdbc`. 6. On the **Connection** section, specify the database connection information for the connector. 7. On the **Advanced** tab, optionally specify connection pooling and reconnection information, including a reconnection strategy. 8. Click **Test Connection** to confirm that Mule can connect with the specified Snowflake database. 9. Click **OK** to close the window. 10. On the **On Table Row** configuration screen, in **Table**, select the name of the table to select from. 11. On the **On Table Row** configuration screen, in **Watermark Column**, select the name of the column to use for the watermark. Values taken from this column are used to filter the contents of the next poll, so that only rows with a later date than the watermark value are processed. 12. On the **On Table Row** configuration screen, in **Id Column**, select the name of the column to consider as the row ID. This parameter ensures the same row is not processed twice by concurrent polls. For example, to configure an HTTP listener source, follow these steps: 1. In **Mule Palette**, select **HTTP > Listener**. 2. Drag **Listener** to the Studio canvas. 3. On the **Listener** configuration screen, optionally change the value of **Display Name**. 4. Specify a value for the **Path** field. 5. Click **+** next to **Connector configuration** to configure a global element that can be used by all instances of the HTTP Listener source in the app. 6. On the **General** tab, specify connection information for the connector. 7. On the **TLS** tab, optionally specify the TLS information for the connector. 8. On the **Advanced** tab, optionally specify reconnection information, including a reconnection strategy. 9. Click **Test Connection** to confirm that Mule can connect with the specified server. 10. Click **OK**. ## Add a Connector Operation to the Flow When you add a connector operation to your flow, you are specifying an action for that connector to perform. To add an operation for Snowflake Connector, follow these steps: 1. In **Mule Palette**, select **Snowflake** and then select the desired operation. 2. Drag the operation onto the Studio canvas to the right of the input source. ## Configure a Global Element for the Connector When you configure a connector, configure a global element that all instances of that connector in the app can use. Configuring a global element requires you to provide the authentication credentials that the connector requires to access the target Snowflake system. Snowflake Connector supports the Snowflake Connection type to connect to Snowflake. To configure the global element for Snowflake Connector, follow these steps: 1. Select the operation in the Studio canvas. 2. In the configuration screen for the operation, click **+** next to the **Connector configuration** field to access the global element configuration fields. 3. In the **General** tab, in **Required Libraries**, click **Configure** and select from the following options to install the required JDBC driver: - **Add recommended libraries** - **Use local file** - **Add Maven dependency** 4. In **Connection**, enter the following required information to configure authentication: - **Account name** Account name that was provided when registering for the Snowflake account. - **Warehouse** Name of the virtual Snowflake warehouse to use. The specified warehouse must be an existing warehouse for which the specified account has privileges. - **Database** Snowflake database to connect to. The specified database must be an existing database for which the specified account has privileges. - **Schema** Snowflake database schema to use. The specified schema must be an existing schema for which the specified account has privileges. Either reference a configuration file that contains ANT-style property placeholders (recommended) or enter your authorization credentials in the global configuration properties. For information about the benefits of using property placeholders and how to configure them, see [Anypoint Connector Configuration](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/intro-connector-configuration-overview). 5. On the **Advanced** tab, optionally specify reconnection information, including a reconnection strategy. 6. Click **Test Connection** to confirm that Mule can connect with the specified server. 7. Click **OK**. ## Configure Additional Connector Fields After you configure a global element for Snowflake Connector, configure the other required fields for the connector. The required fields vary depending on which connector operation you use. ## View the App Log To check for problems, view the app log: - If you’re running the app from Anypoint Platform, the app log output is visible in the Anypoint Studio console window. - If you’re running the app using Mule from the command line, the app log output is visible in your OS console. Unless the log file path is customized in the app’s log file (`log4j2.xml`), you can also view the app log in the default location `MULE_HOME/logs/.log`. You can configure the location of the log path in the app log file `log4j2.xml`. ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Using Anypoint Studio to Configure a Connector](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/intro-config-use-studio) - [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/1.3/snowflake-connector-reference) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com) --- product: Snowflake Connector version: 1.4 is-latest-version: true --- # Using Anypoint Studio to Configure Snowflake Connector 1.4 > For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt Anypoint Studio (Studio) editors help you design and update your Mule applications, properties, and configuration files. If, after reading this topic, you need additional information about the connector fields, see the [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-reference). ## See Also - [Introduction to Anypoint Connectors](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/introduction-to-anypoint-connectors) - [Using Anypoint Studio to Configure a Connector](https://docs.mulesoft.com/connectors/introduction/intro-config-use-studio) - [Snowflake Connector Reference](https://docs.mulesoft.com/snowflake-connector/latest/snowflake-connector-reference) - [Salesforce Help](https://help.salesforce.com)
