# Developing Automations

> For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt

The first phase of process automation is the **Design** phase.

In this phase, the flow of the process is modeled using BPMN.

You can create a new model, import a model that has been created with other tools and edit it or
record a process with RPA Recorder.

As an option, you can have the model tested for formal correctness and completeness while it is
being created. This enables you to quickly detect and resolve errors in the structure.

The second phase of process automation is the **Build** phase.

In the build phase the elements of the process model are filled with concrete instructions in RPA
Builder. RPA Bots execute these instructions when a process is deployed to them.

As long as the project is in the build phase, it can be seen in the repository of RPA Builder.

## Before You Begin

- Ask an organization administrator in Access Management to assign you the required permissions:

<table><colgroup><col> <col> <col></colgroup><thead><tr><th>Action</th><th>RPA Permission</th><th>Deprecated RPA Permission</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><p>Open the <strong>Process Automation</strong> module.</p></td><td><p>RPA Automations Designer, RPA Automations Contributor, RPA Automations Manager, RPA Administrator</p></td><td><p>Process Automation Open</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Create processes.</p></td><td><p>RPA Automations Designer, RPA Automations Contributor, RPA Automations Manager, RPA Administrator</p></td><td><p>Process Create</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Record processes with RPA Recorder.</p></td><td><p>RPA Automations Designer, RPA Automations Contributor, RPA Automations Manager, RPA Administrator</p></td><td><p>Process Recording</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Implement process projects in RPA Builder</p></td><td><p>RPA Automations Contributor, RPA Automations Manager, RPA Administrator</p></td><td><p>Builder Usage</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Open and use the activity library in RPA Builder and the bot workflow library in RPA Manager.</p></td><td><p>RPA Automations Contributor, RPA Automations Manager, RPA Administrator</p></td><td><p>Activity Library Open</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Use and manage the activity library in RPA Builder and the bot workflow library in RPA Manager.</p></td><td><p>RPA Automations Manager, RPA Administrator</p></td><td><p>Activity Library Administration</p></td></tr></tbody></table>

- To record a process, RPA Recorder must be installed and connected to RPA Manager.

- To build a process automation, RPA Builder must be installed and connected to RPA Manager.

- A project must exist in the **Project Management** view of the **Process Automation** module.

- Obtain the needed permissions as a member of the process team in the project data sheet in the
**Project Management** view of the **Process Automation** module.

## Design a Process Model

Create, record or import a model of the flow of the process using _Business Process Model and
Notation (BPMN)_.

The process model should include all possible paths and outcomes. You can add documentation to each
element of the diagram.

### Model a Process

Create a process model by arranging the BPMN elements on the workbench.

Each model must consist at least of a **Start Event**, a **Bot Task** or a **User Task** and an
**End Event**. All elements must be connected by **Sequence Flows**. RPA Manager automatically
checks the syntax of the model.

After saving the process model, move the project to the **Build** phase and open it in RPA Builder.
The model can be edited in RPA Builder, too.

1. Open the **Process Management** view of the **Process Automation** module and click on the name
of the category of your project.

2. Click on the name of the project to open it.

3. In the panel **Automation**, on the workbench, click on an element to select the next step from
the context pad or drag an element from the palette onto the workbench and connect it to the
previous step with a **Flow** element.

4. Add documentation

5. Add, edit, and remove elements until the model is finished.

6. On the workbench, click the icon **Save**.

### Record a Process

If you record a process the model is prefilled with instructions for RPA Builder to generate code.

After saving the recorded process model, move the project to the **Build** phase and open it in RPA
Builder. The model can be edited in RPA Builder, too.

1. Open the **Process Management** view of the **Process Automation** module and click on the name
of the category of your project.

2. Click on the name of the project to open it.

3. In the panel **Automation**, on the workbench, click on the icon **Record BPMN** to start RPA
    Recorder.

4. After recording, click the icon **Save** on the workbench.

### Import a Process

Import a process model generated with another BPMN tool. Only the elements shown in the workbench
are supported. Importing a model overwrites previously created models.

3. In the panel **Automation**, on the workbench, click on the icon **Import BPMN** to select a
    file for import.

4. In the palette on the workbench, click the icon **Fit to Viewport** to see the complete model.

5. On the workbench, click the icon **Save**.

## Build a Process

In the build phase, use RPA Builder to fill the process model with bot-readable code.

### Open a Process in RPA Builder

Publish a project to build phase to open it in RPA Builder. The process is shown in the RPA Builder
repository explorer while the project is in the build phase.

1. Open the **Process Management** view of the **Process Automation** module and click on the name
of the category of your project.

2. Click on the name of the project to open it.

3. Click **Publish**.

4. In the window **Release to Build**, add the needed applications.

5. Check **I confirm that the process should be released into the build phase and all responsible
    persons have agreed.**

6. Click **Release to Build** to confirm the transition.

7. Open RPA Builder.

8. In the explorer pane, in tab **Repository**, click **<process name>**.

### View a Process Build in RPA Manager

View the project in RPA Manager after the implemented process has been uploaded from RPA Builder.
Move the project to **Test** phase to test the build.

1. Open the **Process Management** view of the **Process Automation** module and click on the name
of the category of your project.

2. Click on the name of the project to open it.

3. Click on a bot task in the diagram in the **Automation** panel to view the outline of the
    implementation in the panel **Implementation**.
