# Configuring and Managing Message Flows

> For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt

A message flow is the path along which a message travels from its source, through a DataWeave
translation map, to its target. You set up message flows to send and receive messages between your
systems and your partners.

Anypoint Partner Manager message flows consist of objects such as endpoints, message types,
identifiers, and mappings. Partner Manager’s message framework orchestrates the processing of your
business transactions from source to target using the configuration objects shown in the following
diagram:

You can create message flows in one of the following contexts:

- Inbound

An inbound message flow receives messages from your partners, transforms them into your internal
application message format, and sends the transformed messages to your backend systems.

For more information, see [Inbound Message Flows](https://docs.mulesoft.com/partner-manager/latest/inbound-message-flows).

- Outbound

An outbound message flow receives messages from your backend applications, transforms the messages
to your partner’s message format, and sends the EDI messages to your partner.

For more information, see [Outbound Message Flows](https://docs.mulesoft.com/partner-manager/latest/outbound-message-flows).
