# Hardware and Software Requirements for On-Premises Mule Runtime Engine

> For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt

Confirm these requirements before you download on-premises runtime. This is the Prerequisites stage
in [On-Premises Runtimes Overview](https://docs.mulesoft.com/on-premises/4.12/). After the host meets them, download Mule Enterprise Edition.
See
[Download, Install, Configure, and Upgrade On-Premises Mule Runtime Engine](https://docs.mulesoft.com/on-premises/4.12/runtime-installation-task).

## Review Minimum Hardware Requirements

The CloudHub vCore sizing model doesn’t apply to on-premises runtime. You size CPU, heap, and RAM on
the host yourself.

- 2 GHz CPU or 1 virtual CPU in virtualized environments.

- 1 GB of RAM.

- 4 GB of storage.

Adjust RAM to match your latency requirements and the size and number of simultaneous messages that
Mule applications process.

Mule runtime engine supports the x86 and x64 architectures. On-premises runtime isn’t supported on
ARM processors.

## Use a Supported Java Version

Verify that you use a supported version of Java before you install Mule runtime engine. Mule runtime
engine requires JDK 17.

<table><colgroup><col> <col></colgroup><thead><tr><th>Software</th><th>Version</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><div><div><p>JDK</p></div></div></td><td><div><div><p>JDK 17</p></div></div></td></tr></tbody></table>

> [!NOTE] Though you can run a different JDK of choice, MuleSoft doesn’t support or take action to
> fix issues if they’re traced back to the JDK.

## Review Supported Operating Systems

Mule runtime engine is supported on any operating system that runs a Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
from a supported JDK. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a tested distribution. MuleSoft supports
RHEL clones such as Rocky Linux even when a specific clone version isn’t listed as tested.

### Review Tested Software

Mule runtime engine passed functional testing against these software and operating systems:

<table><colgroup><col> <col></colgroup><thead><tr><th>Software</th><th>Version</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><div><div><p>OS</p></div></div></td><td><div><div><p>MacOS 10.15, Windows Server 2019, Windows 10, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4, Ubuntu Server 20.04</p></div></div></td></tr><tr><td><div><div><p>JDK</p></div></div></td><td><div><div><p>Adoptium OpenJDK distribution</p></div></div></td></tr></tbody></table>

This Mule version bundles the Runtime Manager agent plugin version 2.7.14. You need that agent only
if you register the instance with Anypoint Runtime Manager. That registered model is a
[Hybrid Standalone Runtime](https://docs.mulesoft.com/hybrid-standalone/), not unregistered on-premises runtime. For
agent compatibility, see
[Runtime Manager Agent Release Notes](https://docs.mulesoft.com/release-notes/runtime-manager-agent/runtime-manager-agent-release-notes).

## Troubleshoot Common Error Messages

### `Unsupported class file major version 61`

This error means bytecode compiled for Java 17 (class file major version 61) was loaded by an older
JDK, or Mule runtime engine is running on an unsupported JDK. Mule runtime engine requires JDK 17.

### `JavaVersionNotSupportedByExtensionException`

An extension, connector, or module such as APIkit doesn’t support the JDK that on-premises runtime
is running. Mule runtime engine requires JDK 17. Align the Mule application’s Java compatibility
with that JDK, or run a JDK the extension lists as supported.

### `OutOfMemoryError: Metaspace`

The JVM that hosts on-premises runtime ran out of Metaspace. Increase Metaspace in the Java Service
Wrapper (`wrapper.conf`) rather than only increasing heap. Heap and Metaspace are separate pools.
See
[Configure JVM Memory and Wrapper Timeouts](https://docs.mulesoft.com/on-premises/4.12/runtime-installation-task#configure-jvm-memory-and-wrapper-timeouts).
