# Applying Policies in Local Mode

> For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt

For Flex Gateway running in Local Mode, you apply API policies using
[local declarative configuration files](https://docs.mulesoft.com/gateway/1.9/flex-local-configuration-reference-guide). You specify the
location of these configuration files when you first run Flex Gateway.

See [Registering and Running Flex Gateway in Local Mode](https://docs.mulesoft.com/gateway/1.9/flex-local-reg-run) for more information
about how to start the gateway.

Refer to the following tutorials for examples on applying policies to APIs in Local Mode:

- [Secure an API with Basic Authentication and Rate Limiting](https://docs.mulesoft.com/gateway/1.9/flex-local-secure-api-with-basic-auth-policy)

- [Secure an API with an Automated Resource-Level Policy](https://docs.mulesoft.com/gateway/1.9/flex-local-secure-api-with-auto-policy)

- [Secure an API with a Custom Policy](https://docs.mulesoft.com/gateway/1.9/flex-local-deploy-custom-policy)
