## Summary

The MCP Support Policy configures Omni Gateway to support MCP server instances. You must apply this
policy to all MCP server instances for the instance to function properly. If you don’t apply this
policy, Omni Gateway might throw a runtime error.

The MCP Support policy enables the **Total MCP Calls** metric that tracks the total successful and
unsuccessful calls made to the MCP server. To view the total MCP calls, see
[Viewing Key Metrics in API Manager for Managed Omni Gateway](https://docs.mulesoft.com/gateway/1.13/managed-view-api-metrics).

Configure the policy to inject the MCP primitive as request headers toward the upstream backend so
that downstream policies can use it. To learn more, see
[Configuring Policy Parameters](#configuring-policy-parameters).

> [!NOTE] This policy must come first in policy order. If this policy doesn’t come first, Omni
> Gateway might throw a runtime error.

## Configuring Policy Parameters

### Omni Gateway Local Mode

The MCP Support policy isn’t supported in Local Mode.

### Managed Omni Gateway and Omni Gateway Connected Mode

When you apply the policy from the UI, the following parameters are displayed:

<table><colgroup><col> <col> <col></colgroup><thead><tr><th>Element</th><th>Description</th><th>Default</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><div><div><p>Inject MCP Element Headers</p></div></div></td><td><div><div><p>Injects the MCP primitive as request headers for downstream policy use. The policy sets <code>x-ms-mcp-element-id</code> to the identifier (<code>tools/call</code> name, <code>prompts/get</code> name, or <code>resources/read</code> URI) and <code>x-ms-mcp-element-type</code> to the kind (<code>tool</code>, <code>prompt</code>, or <code>resource</code>). These headers lets a downstream policy match on type, an individual element or both</p></div></div></td><td><div><div><p>Disabled</p></div></div></td></tr></tbody></table>
