# Modify API Groups

> For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt

If your business requirements change, you might want to modify an API Group by adding new API
instances to it. To cover new scenarios, you might want to add a new API instance.

You can also version an existing instance to add customizations. If a service is no longer required,
you can remove the respective API instance that supports the service. However, modifying API Groups
and API Group instances involves specific [restrictions](#restrictions).

When you publish an API Group in Exchange, the [status](#exchange_status) of the API Group changes
based on specific scenarios.

## Restrictions for Modifying API Group and Instances

Before you modify an API Group, ensure that you carefully review the restrictions:

- Add new instances of APIs that already exist in the group only if the API Group instance has no
  contracts.

- Add only API instances that belong to the same identity provider (IdP).

You cannot mix IdPs in an API Group instance.

- Add API instances but not APIs if:

  - The API Group instance is published.

  - The API Group version is published.

  - The API Group version has multiple API Group instances.

## Exchange Status Based on API Group Transactions

The Exchange status of an API Group depends on these conditions:

- If your API Group is published in Exchange, your Exchange asset displays the new API instance.

- If the API instance you added is related to an asset that is already linked to the Exchange API
Groups asset, the API instance displays these details.

- If the API instance you added belongs to a new asset that is not yet liked to the Exchange API
Groups asset, customers must create a new version of the API Groups asset.

## Task Prerequisites

Before you begin, you must have:

- At least one API instance in your organization or business group

Otherwise, you will not be able to find the required organization or business group in the list.

- API Group Administrator permissions to add API instances to an API Group

## Add API Instances to Existing API Groups

You might want to add API instances to an existing API Group to widen the business problem it
solves.

To add API instances to an existing API Group:

1. Navigate to **Anypoint Platform** > **API Manager**.

2. Click **API Groups**.

3. On the API Groups details page, expand the API Group to view its available versions.

4. Click **Add group instance** for the version of the API Group that you want to add the API
    instance to.

The **Creating a new group instance** page is displayed.

5. Click **+Add**.

6. If the API instance and the API Group belong to the same business group or organization, select
the API, API version, environment, and API version/instance to add to the API Group.

7. If the API instance and the API Group belong to different business groups:

    1. Click **Add Organization**.

    2. Select the organization or business group in which your API instance is available and click
        **Add**.

    3. Select the environment, API instance, and version that you want to add.

8. Click **Save**.

Your API instances are now added to the API Group. To publish your API Group in Exchange, see
    [Publishing API Groups to Exchange](https://docs.mulesoft.com/api-manager/latest/api-groups-publishing-to-exchange).

## Remove API Instances from API Groups

If your business requirements change, you might want to modify an API Group by removing an existing
API instance.

To remove an API instance from an API Group:

1. Navigate to **Anypoint Platform** > **API Manager**.

2. Click **API Groups**.

3. On the API Groups page, expand the API Group to view its available versions.

4. Expand the API Group version to view its available instances.

5. Click the API Group instance to view the instance details.

6. Click the more options menu icon (
![overflow menu icon](/mulesoft/current/en-us/api-manager/latest/_images/overflow-menu-icon.png "Screenshot of the more options menu icon")
) next to **Edit** and select **Delete**.

    > [!NOTE] If the API instance you removed is the last API linked to an asset, you must create a
    > new version of the API Group.

7. Click the checkbox to acknowledge that you understand **this action can’t be undone** then click
    **Delete Group instance**.

## Create API Group Versions

If you modify an API Group to add a new API or delete an existing API based on changing business
requirements, you might need to version the API Group appropriately.

To create additional versions of an API Group:

1. Navigate to **Anypoint Platform** > **API Manager**.

2. Click **API Groups**.

3. Click **Add group version** for the API Group.

4. In the **API Group Version** field, specify the version number that you want to create: for
    example, `v1.1` or `v2.0`.

5. In the **API Group instance label** field, enter a label to uniquely identify this instance of
    the group.

6. Click **Continue**. .

7. Add API instances in the API Groups.

The API Group is prepopulated with the existing instances from the previous version. For more
information about how to add API instances to an API Group, see
[Adding API Instances to Existing Groups](#adding-api-instances-to-groups).

8. Click **Save**.
