# Configuring an MCP Server

> For the full documentation index, see: https://docs.mulesoft.com/llms.txt

Add and manage MCP servers in Anypoint Code Builder to extend MuleSoft Vibes with tools for API
design, integrations, governance, and agent networks.

## Use MuleSoft MCP Servers

MuleSoft MCP Servers implement the Model Context Protocol (MCP) so AI assistants in your IDE can
work with MuleSoft products and services. MuleSoft DX MCP Server supports API design, application
deployment, and asset management. MuleSoft Platform MCP Server supports service discovery, policy
enforcement, and traffic monitoring across your organization.

MuleSoft MCP Servers are available in Anypoint Code Builder and are also supported when you use the
Anypoint Extension Pack in compatible IDEs such as VS Code, Cursor, or Windsurf.

For more information about MuleSoft MCP Servers, see:
[MuleSoft MCP Servers](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mulesoft-mcp-server/).

## Use MuleSoft MCP Server Tools with GitHub Copilot

When you install Anypoint Code Builder, the MuleSoft MCP Server tools are automatically registered
in VS Code through the Language Model API.

> [!IMPORTANT] The MuleSoft MCP Server is included with Anypoint Code Builder. You do not need to
> install or configure it separately.

To invoke the tools using natural language commands, you need GitHub Copilot. The MuleSoft MCP
Server tools work with **GitHub Copilot Chat** in Agent mode. They are not available in the MuleSoft
Vibes AI chat interface.

### Before You Begin

1. Set up and log in to GitHub Copilot in VS Code. For instructions, see
[Set up GitHub Copilot in VS Code](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/copilot/setup).

2. Enable Agent mode in VS Code settings:

    1. Open **Settings** by pressing **Ctrl+,** (Windows/Linux) or **Cmd+,** (Mac).

    2. Search for `chat`.

    3. Enable the following settings:

        - **Chat > Agent: Enabled** — Enables agent mode for Copilot Chat.

        - **Chat > Extension Tools: Enabled** — Enables tools contributed by third-party extensions,
          including MuleSoft MCP tools.

        - **Chat > Mcp: Enabled** — Enables integration with MCP servers.

    4. Restart Anypoint Code Builder if needed.

### Invoke MCP Tools in Agent Mode

1. Open Copilot Chat in VS Code by selecting **View** > **Chat**.

2. In the Copilot Chat panel, set the chat mode to **Agent**.

    > [!IMPORTANT] The MuleSoft MCP Server tools are only available in **Agent** mode. They are not
    > available in **Ask** mode.

3. Select **Add Context** > **Tools** to add MuleSoft MCP tools to your session.

4. Scroll through the list and select one or more MuleSoft MCP tools.

    > [!NOTE] You may need to re-add the context at the start of each session if it is not retained.

5. Enter a natural language prompt to invoke a MuleSoft MCP Server tool.

For a list of available tools and example prompts, see
    [MuleSoft MCP Servers](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mulesoft-mcp-server/).

## Add and Manage Custom MCP Servers

From the MuleSoft Vibes panel, you can add your own MCP server or manage connected MCP servers
through the MCP Server settings.

## Open MCP Server Settings

1. Open the MuleSoft Vibes panel in Anypoint Code Builder.

2. Select **Manage MCP Servers**.

    > [!NOTE] From this view, you can enable or disable MCP servers that have been installed.
    > MuleSoft MCP Servers comes pre-installed with MuleSoft Vibes.

3. Select the gear icon to open the full MCP Server settings.

This opens the MCP Servers UI with three tabs:

- **Marketplace**

- **Remote Servers**

- **Installed**

With these views, you can install new MCP servers, connect to remote MCP servers, and manage
existing MCP servers.

## Add an MCP Server

You can add a custom MCP server by installing the server from the Marketplace, adding a remote MCP
server, or manually editing the configuration file.

### Install From Marketplace

1. In MCP Server settings, select the **Marketplace** tab.

2. Browse the available MCP servers or filter by category.

3. Click **Install** to add the selected MCP server to your environment.

    > [!NOTE] Marketplace servers include community-provided MCP servers. Not all servers are
    > supported by Salesforce.

### Add a Remote MCP Server

1. Select the **Remote Servers** tab.

2. Enter a **Server Name** and a **Service URL** for the remote MCP server.

3. Click **Add Server** to connect to the remote instance.

4. (Optional) Select **Edit Configuration** to manually configure the MCP server by updating the
    `a4d_mcp_settings.json` file.

### Manually Configure the JSON File

If needed, you can configure MCP servers directly by editing the `a4d_mcp_settings.json` file:

1. From the **Remote Servers** tab, select **Edit Configuration**.

2. Update fields such as server names, URLs, and additional settings.

3. Save your changes to apply the configuration.

## Manage Installed MCP Servers

Once an MCP server has been installed, you can manage it from the **Installed** tab.

## Turn Servers On and Off

1. Select the **Installed** tab.

2. Toggle each MCP server on or off.

3. To restart a server, select **Restart Server** from its configuration panel.

## Manage Tools for an MCP Server

Each MCP server provides a set of tools that MuleSoft Vibes can use. The following steps show you
how to work with an MCP server:

1. In the **Installed** tab, select a server to expand its details.

2. View the list of available tools for that server.

3. To auto-approve an individual tool, check the **Auto-approve** box next to that tool.

    > [!NOTE] Auto-approval for tools is available only if Auto-approve has been enabled in MuleSoft
    > Vibes settings.

4. To auto-approve all tools from a server, scroll to the bottom of the list and enable
    **Auto-approve all tools**.

## Configure Request Timeout

Follow these steps to configure how long MuleSoft Vibes waits for a response from an MCP server:

1. In the server details panel, locate **Request Timeout**.

2. Select a timeout value.

## Delete an MCP Server

To remove an MCP server:

1. Open the server’s configuration panel from the **Installed** tab.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the tools list.

3. Select **Delete Server**.

4. Confirm the deletion.

> [!NOTE] You can delete custom MCP servers that you add. The MuleSoft MCP Server is pre-installed
> with MuleSoft Vibes and can be turned on or off, but it can’t be removed.

Tool availability, behavior, and stability may vary depending on the MCP server version and
configuration, as well as whether the server is community-provided or supported by Salesforce.
