# Get Started with Industry API

Use TM Forum Industry APIs to integrate external systems with Communications Cloud. Complete these steps before you call a specific TMF API.

1. Choose the APIs you need. Confirm TM Forum certification, specification version, and whether the API runs in the managed package, on the Salesforce platform, or both.
2. Enable access. Accept the terms of use, authorize the client, configure data restriction and sharing, and import TMFOpenAPI static resources for managed-package APIs.
3. Call the API. Build the request URL. For OmniStudio-based APIs, disable unused optional fields to improve performance.
4. Extend the API when your business requires custom mappings, validations, or lifecycle hooks. Start with the extensibility framework, then open the Extensibility topic under the API you are customizing.

## Access Methods

For the Spring'26 and Summer'26 releases, inbound APIs can be accessed using either of the following methods.

- **Mule Gateway:** Access APIs through standard MuleSoft endpoints. For sample URLs, payloads, and parameter descriptions, see [Reference](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/industries/communications/references/rn_comms?meta=Summary) section for details on MuleSoft endpoints.
- **Direct Access:** Bypass Mule Gateway using Connect/Apex REST endpoints.
  - See [Use Cases](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/industries/communications/guide/TMFAPI_Usecases.html) section for sample URLs and payloads.
  - See [Resource Mappings](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/industries/communications/guide/resource_mappings.html) section for parameter descriptions.

**important:** Starting from the Winter ’27 release, only the Direct Access option will be supported. The MuleSoft gateway option will be deprecated, and customers must update their integrations to use the Connect/Apex REST endpoints for continued access to the inbound APIs.
