# Connecting to FTP

Use an FTP server as a source or destination for CSV files in Dataloader from MuleSoft for import and export tasks. FTP connections in Dataloader are unencrypted. For encrypted transfer, use [Connect to SFTP](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/dataloader/guide/connect-sftp.md) when your plan supports it.

## Before You Connect

- FTPS: Dataloader from MuleSoft doesn’t support FTP over TLS (Transport Layer Security) / SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). For a secure file transfer connection, use [Connect to SFTP](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/dataloader/guide/connect-sftp.md) instead.
- Passive mode: Dataloader supports only passive mode and requires permission for the LIST command.
- Firewalls: If your FTP directory is behind a firewall, open your ports to [Dataloader from MuleSoft’s IP addresses](https://dataloader.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/6293223308179).

## Import Files from FTP

Use your FTP server as a CSV source and select the **FTP** tab on the source file chooser.

During an import, follow [Importing Data into Salesforce](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/dataloader/guide/import-data.md) until you upload your CSV file. From the source file chooser, connect to FTP and select your file:

1. If this is your first FTP connection, click the plus icon in the source file chooser to add an FTP account.

2. Enter your FTP account credentials on the form then click **Save**.

3. Select files from your FTP server in the chooser instead of uploading from local storage.

4. Continue with [map the fields](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/dataloader/guide/import-data.md#step-3-map-the-fields) to complete your import task.

## Export Data to FTP

With Dataloader from MuleSoft, export data as CSV files to an FTP server. In the last step of the export wizard, add a destination folder there.

When you [export data from Salesforce](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/dataloader/guide/export-data.md), follow the connection and query steps then, on the **Run** step, add an FTP destination:

1. Click **Add Destination folder**.

2. Select the checkbox labeled **Send a copy of the results to this location**.

3. Select the **FTP** tab.

4. Select your FTP connection and folder.

5. Click **Save and Run** to run your task (or **Save** to run it later).
