# `UPPER`

**Applies to:** ✅ Data 360 SQL ✅ Tableau Hyper API

Converts a string to uppercase.

## Syntax

```sql
upper(<string>)
```

## Arguments

### Required

- `<string>`: The string to convert.

## Returns

Returns a text value with all characters converted to uppercase.

## Considerations

- Non-alphabetic characters remain unchanged.
- Conversion follows locale-independent rules.

## Examples

### Convert to Uppercase

Transform a lowercase string.

```sql
SELECT upper('tom') AS result;
```

Returns `'TOM'`.
