# Set Up Payment Processing

To collect credit card payment information in your store, create a payment gateway and connect it to your checkout. The adapter you also create to communicate with the gateway depends on whether you implement a server- or client-side payment process.

**note:** Payment processing in the checkout flow is limited to payment authorization. The checkout flow doesn’t collect or store payment information in the provided payment components. Payment authorization occurs prior to order placement to limit the chance of an error occurring before credit card authorization.
