# Step Two: Authorize

Before working with the Reports and Dashboards REST API, get approval with Salesforce using OAuth. Salesforce uses the OAuth protocol to securely connect applications.

To learn more about Salesforce authorization with OAuth, see [Authorize Apps with OAuth](https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=remoteaccess_authenticate.htm) in the *Salesforce Help*.

To walk through the authorization process, see [Step Two: Set Up Authentication](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/atlas.en-us.api_rest.meta/api_rest/quickstart_oauth.htm) in the Salesforce REST API Developer Guide.
