# Link and Unlink Partners by Using APIs

A loyalty program member or a customer service representative can link and unlink partners. The partner linking process begins when a customer initiates a linkage from either a partner app or the loyalty ecosystem.

Depending on the starting point, the user is authenticated and authorized via the respective platform before the system calls the Link Program Member Partner connect API. This API call utilizes specific inputs, including the loyalty program ID, member ID, partner ID, and an external reference number, to process the request. Finally, Salesforce creates a new linkage record and sets the status to Active, enabling seamless cross-program rewards. The partner unlinking process initiates when a customer requests to disconnect their accounts. This request triggers a call to the Unlink Program Member Partner connect API, terminates the connection between the loyalty program and the partner. The system automatically marks the linkage status as Inactive to stop cross-program benefits and updates the unlink date to maintain an accurate historical audit trail. The Link Member and Partner and Unlink Member and Partner connect APIs support custom parameters. You can add custom fields to the Loyalty Program Member Linked Partner object and those fields will be available to use in the Get Member Partner Linkage Status rule action.
