Each Salesforce user account includes a valid username and an active email address. Usernames must be formatted like an email address, so some users have a username that’s identical to their email address and some don’t. Because you know your email address and Salesforce requires you to add it to your account, why not use that to log in instead of a potentially random username?
If you use a shared email address or you can’t receive messages sent to your email address, continue to log in by using your username.
If your email address is protected by Platform Shield Encryption or if you have the Prevent login with login.salesforce.com and welcome.salesforce.com setting turned on, you can't log in with your email address.
The option to log in with your email address improves usability, because you don't need to remember a unique username. Email-based login helps with password reset as well. Without a username, the password reset flow requires the email address you use for verification. Log in with email supports single sign-on and improves the mobile app login experience.
When you enter your email address, Salesforce automatically detects your authentication method. If you have only one auth provider, it redirects you to the corresponding login experience. If you have more options, Salesforce shows these options for you to choose.
If you use single sign-on (SSO), the service sends you to your identity provider to complete the login process.
To access the Log In with Email page from the log in with username page, click Log In with Email. If you always log in with your email, continue to do so using welcome.salesforce.com or your normal login method.
To maintain login tests that use a username, change the login URL to
login.salesforce.com/?login=1. This is useful for automated testing and
synthetic users. Otherwise, tests can be set up using My Domain.
