# Configure and Deploy the Mobile, Push Notification, or Notification Plugin with Metadata API

Create settings or policies files for your external client app, then deploy the files to your external client app.

1. For each [metadata type](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.meta_mobile_notifications_push_plugins_list.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Learn the metadata types available to configure an external client app’s mobile, push notification, and notification plugins with Metadata API.") that you want to create for your external client app, create an XML file with the required file suffix in the required directory location. See the Metadata API documentation for each metadata type.
2. Configure each XML file with the fields for the [metadata type](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.meta_mobile_notifications_push_plugins_list.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Learn the metadata types available to configure an external client app’s mobile, push notification, and notification plugins with Metadata API.").
3. After you create the relevant metadata types, configure the package.xml manifest file in the project directory to reference the metadata types that you created.

    For example, this package.xml file references the ExtlClntAppMobileSettings and ExtlClntAppMobileConfigurablePolicies metadata types.

    ```xml
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <Package xmlns="http://soap.sforce.com/2006/04/metadata">
        <types>
            <members>*</members>
            <name>ExtlClntAppMobileSettings</name>
        </types>
        <types>
            <members>*</members>
            <name>ExtlClntAppMobileConfigurablePolicies</name>
        </types>
        <version>64.0</version>
    </Package>
    ```
4. To deploy the new metadata types, run this command.

    ```
    sf project deploy start --manifest package.xml --target-org example@example.com
    ```
5. To retrieve the deployed package.xml file, run this command.

    ```
    sf project retrieve start --manifest package.xml --target-org example@example.com
    ```
