# Recover Access if Your Verification Method Is Replaced, Gets Lost, or Stops Working (Salesforce Orgs)

There are situations that can affect your identity verification method so you’re not able to use it for multi-factor authentication (MFA) logins to your Salesforce account.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience</td></tr><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: all editions</td></tr></tbody></table>

Access issues typically fall into two categories. The most likely is you lose or replace your verification method — for example, you get a new mobile phone or computer and need to switch your authenticator app or built-in authenticator to your new hardware, or you lose your security key and replace it with a new one. Another possibility is that the connection between your verification method and your Salesforce account stops working. In these cases, the way to restore MFA login access is to disconnect the affected verification method, then either reconnect it or register a replacement method instead.

- If you're not able to log in to complete this task, ask your admin for a [temporary verification code](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.user_temp_id_verif_code.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "If you don’t have access to the verification method that you usually use for multi-factor authentication (MFA), ask your Salesforce admin to give you a temporary verification code. The code is valid for 1 to 24 hours. Your admin sets the expiration time, but you can expire the code early if you no longer need it.").
- If you have trouble disconnecting a verification method, you can ask your admin to disconnect it for you.
- Consider registering two or more verification methods so you have backup options if something happens to your primary method.

The steps for this task depend on the type of verification method that you’re using.

## For the Salesforce Authenticator app, a third-party one-time password authenticator app, or a security key

1. From your personal settings, in the Quick Find box, enter Advanced User Details, and then select **Advanced User Details**.
2. In the User Detail section, find your verification method and click **\[Disconnect\]**.

3. Reconnect the verification method or register a replacement method. See [Register an Identity Verification Method for Salesforce Orgs](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.basics_identity_register_verifiers.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required for Salesforce logins. To access your account, you need a registered identity verification method that you provide after entering your username and password. When MFA is turned on, if you haven’t registered a method yet, you’re automatically prompted to do so at login. If you’re already logged in, you can register methods at any time. The registration process creates a connection between the chosen method and your Salesforce account. You can also use a registered verification method if you receive a device activation challenge for an unfamiliar login attempt.").

## For a built-in authenticator

1. From your personal settings, in the Quick Find box, enter Advanced User Details, and then select **Advanced User Details**.
2. In the Built-in Authenticators section, find the built-in authenticator that you want to disconnect.
3. Click **Del**, and then click **OK** when prompted to confirm.

4. Reconnect the verification method or register a replacement method. See [Register an Identity Verification Method for Salesforce Orgs](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.basics_identity_register_verifiers.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required for Salesforce logins.
