# Compare Stepped and Retrospective Calculation Methods (Example)

This example contrasts how the same transaction volume produces different financial output and source records depending on whether the rebate type uses the Stepped or Retrospective calculation method.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: <strong>Enterprise</strong>, <strong>Unlimited</strong>, and <strong>Developer</strong> Editions that have Rebate and Accrual Management Advanced enabled.</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Benefit Tier Structure

A volume-based rebate type is configured with these benefit tiers:

- **Tier 1 (0 to 100 units):** $2 per unit
- **Tier 2 (101 to 300 units):** $4 per unit

## Transaction Data

Member **Apex Logistics** records a total transaction quantity of **250 units** in the monthly period.

Note The Stepped method generates separate Accrual Source or Payout Source records for each tier threshold crossed during processing, providing granular line-item tracking for audit purposes.
