Before you assign volunteers to initiatives, complete these tasks.

- [Create volunteer initiatives](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.volunteer_mgmt_create_volunteer_initiatives.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Set up initiatives for volunteers to help your organization accomplish its goals. Specify start and end dates, the number of volunteers needed, and the total number of volunteer hours to be filled.").
- [Create job positions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.volunteer_mgmt_create_job_positions.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "After you create volunteer initiatives, create job positions that support those initiatives. Job positions are customized roles for working your initiatives with shifts and qualifications that help you match the perfect volunteers for the initiatives.").
- Add Person Location Availability and Person Competencies, related lists to the Person Account page layout.
- Enter your potential volunteers as Person Accounts.

    ![Note](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sfdo-nonprofit_cloud-264-0-0-production-enus/b335b49f-b06d-4153-a454-da90077289d9/images/icon_note.png)

Note Person accounts were not built to work with Nonprofit Success Pack and therefore, are not supported for use with NPSP. If Person Accounts are not already enabled in your org, don't enable them. Once you turn on Person Accounts in your organization, you can't turn the feature off. See NPSP and Person Accounts in [NPSP FAQ](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.npsp_faq.htm&language=en_US).
- [Create job position shifts.](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.volunteer_mgmt_create_job_position_shifts.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "A job position shift is a specific work shift that’s associated with a job position or a related recurrence schedule. After developing a volunteer initiative and creating job positions for it, create work shifts that volunteers who meet the position qualifications can fill.")
- To mark assignments as counting toward the shift capacity, add the Count Toward Shift Capacity field to the Job Position Assignment page layout in Setup.

1. From the Volunteer Management app, go to the Job Position Shifts tab.
2. Open the job position shift that you want to assign to a volunteer.
3. From the menu buttons, select **Assign Volunteers**.

The Assign Volunteers to Job Position Shifts window opens.

If you don’t see the button, click ![Open action menu button options.](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sfdo-nonprofit_cloud-264-0-0-production-enus/b335b49f-b06d-4153-a454-da90077289d9/nonprofit_cloud/images/down_60.png), and then select **Assign Volunteers**.
4. Select the status for the job position shift assignment.

Salesforce automatically completes the volunteer initiative and job position fields with data from the job position shift.
5. Select the shift to assign to a volunteer.

If you don’t select a shift, Salesforce applies the assignment to the job position, and doesn’t create a specific job position shift.
6. Click **Next**.
7. Search for and select the volunteer to assign to the job position shift.

You can select multiple volunteers up to the maximum number of attendees set on the job position shift.
8. Click **Save Assignments**.

Salesforce automatically provides an alphanumeric name to the assignments.

A list of the created assignments appears.
9. Click **Finish**.

You can create up to 600 assignment records, and can assign up to 200 shifts to a single volunteer per session.

The Assign Volunteers to Job Position Shifts window refreshes so that you can assign more volunteers to the job position shift. The window also shows how many assignments remain on the shift.

The assignments you created appear as a list on the Job Position Assignments tab.
