# Set Up Volunteer Management with AI Tools

Use these steps to set up and configure Volunteer Management by using Claude Code or Agentforce Vibes.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col style="width:100%"></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: Lightning Experience</td></tr><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available with: <strong>Enterprise</strong>, <strong>Unlimited</strong>, <strong>Developer</strong>, and <strong>Agentforce 1</strong> Nonprofits editions with a Volunteer Management license.</td></tr></tbody></table>

User Permissions Needed
| Permission | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| Admin profile | To turn on Volunteer Management and assign permission sets |
| Manage Volunteer Data permission set (provided to the Salesforce Admin by the agent during setup) | To create and manage Volunteer Management records |

Before you begin, confirm that you have:

- An org with Enterprise, Unlimited, Developer, or Agentforce 1 edition and a Nonprofit Cloud license with Volunteer Management
- Claude Code with the Salesforce CLI installed, or access to Agentforce Vibes
- Person Accounts enabled (recommended)

The agent uses four Volunteer Management skills to guide you through the setup. First, the agent enables the module and assigns permissions. Then it interviews you about your volunteer programs and recommends a record structure. After you confirm the plan, the agent creates records in the correct dependency order.

1. Connect your agent to your Salesforce org.

    - **For Claude Code:** Install the [Salesforce Development plugin](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/salesforce-skills-plugins/guide/overview.html), which provides Salesforce-specific skills and org context through hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
    - **For Agentforce Vibes:** Authenticate to your org. Agentforce Vibes installs, enables, and updates AI Skills automatically. You can manage them from the Skills page, under Toolkit, in Agentforce Vibes.
2. Connect to the [Headless 360 MCP Server (Beta)](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/platform/hosted-mcp-servers/guide/headless-360-mcp.html).

Turn on Volunteer Management and Assign Permissions

1. Ask the agent to set up Volunteer Management.

For example: "Set up Volunteer Management for my org."

The agent checks your org state, enables the Volunteer Management module, and assigns the Manage Volunteer Data permission set to the admin user.
2. **Optional:** Ask the agent to create more users and assign permissions.

For example: "Sarah Chen needs access too — sarah.chen@example.org."

If possible, the agent creates the user record and assigns the Manage Volunteer Data permission set.

Plan Your Volunteer Program Structure

1. Describe your volunteer programs to the agent.

For example: "We run a weekly food distribution every Saturday at our warehouse. Three roles: Setup Crew, Distribution Lead, and Cleanup. The Distribution Lead needs a food safety certification."

Describe your programs in your own words. You don't have to use Volunteer Management terminology.

The agent asks questions to clarify details about scheduling, volunteer capacity per role, qualification requirements, and locations.
2. Answer the agent's questions about your programs.

Provide details such as the number of volunteers per role, specific qualifications, and whether the schedule is recurring. The agent uses your answers to classify each program and determine the right level of complexity.
3. Review the agent's recommended structure and confirm the plan.

The agent proposes a record structure that can include Volunteer Initiatives, Positions, Job Positions, Shifts, and Qualifications. It explains why it recommends each component.

For example, the agent recommends a Position template for roles used across programs. For simpler roles, it recommends direct Job Positions without a template.

After you confirm, the agent logs your decisions and prepares a record creation summary.

Create records.

1. Review the agent's creation summary and approve record creation.

The agent shows a summary of the records that it plans to create. For example: "I'll create 1 Competency, 1 Volunteer Initiative, 1 Position template, 3 Job Positions, 3 Shifts, and 1 Position Qualification. About 10 records total."
2. If the agent recommends picklist fields with values that don’t match your use cases, ask the agent to add the values you need to the picklist.

Use the API name of the picklist so that the agent knows exactly which field to update.

For each record, the agent provides guidance on requirements and which fields to populate.
3. Confirm that the agent can create the records.

The agent creates records in dependency order: Competencies, Volunteer Initiatives, Positions, Job Positions, Shifts, and Qualifications. For each record, the agent provides guidance on requirements and which fields to populate.

The agent creates all records, generates field values, and links them in the correct hierarchy.

Verify and review next steps.

1. Review the agent's verification summary and next-steps checklist.

The agent validates the configuration by checking object relationships and record completeness. It produces a decision log of what was built and why.

    Common remaining tasks include:

    - Add volunteers as Person Accounts.
    - Assign competencies to qualified volunteers.
    - Set up the Experience Cloud volunteer sign-up portal.
    - Run volunteer matching to fill shifts when you're ready for operations.

Volunteer Management is on, users have permissions, and your volunteer program contains records. The agent's decision log and next-steps checklist guide you through any remaining manual configuration.

To verify your setup, check that the Volunteer Management application is active, your users have permission sets, and your records appear in the correct hierarchy. Ask the agent to summarize what it configured if you need a consolidated view.
