# Connect a New Object in Advanced Mapping

Advanced Mapping comes with Contacts, Accounts, Opportunities, and other objects already mapped. You can connect additional objects that are directly related to Contacts, Accounts, or Opportunities.

Note Instructions in this article pertain to connecting a previously unmapped object. If you only need to connect a new field, see [Customize Advanced Mapping](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.npsp_use_advanced_mapping.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Customize Advanced Mapping for data import if you want to map data into an object or field that hasn't yet been mapped.").

Advanced Mapping comes with Contacts, Accounts, Opportunities, and other objects already mapped. You can connect additional objects that are directly related to Contacts, Accounts, or Opportunities. Follow along to see how to connect a new object in Advanced Mapping.

We’ll use the example of Molly at Read Now, an organization dedicated to adult literacy. Molly created a custom object in Salesforce to store constituent responses to Read Now’s annual literature survey. This Survey object is a child of the Contact object, so that Molly can link survey responses to constituent records.

Follow along as Molly connects her custom Survey object in Advanced Mapping.

## Create Fields on the NPSP Data Import Object

To map a new object, Molly first creates two fields on the NPSP Data Import object. She uses the Advanced Mapping naming convention of **\[Object Group Name\] Import Status.** She plans to name her new Object Group Survey 1, so she uses that as the prefix for her field names.

1. Molly creates a text field on the NPSP Data Import object to store Survey 1 Import Status:

![New custom field dialog showing Survey 1 Import Status text field with length of 255](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sfdo-nonprofit_success_pack-264-0-0-production-enus/bd2879e2-2bdc-4012-aa32-dc0c697c4538/nonprofit_success_pack/images/am2_survey_1_field.png)

    ![Important](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sfdo-nonprofit_success_pack-264-0-0-production-enus/bd2879e2-2bdc-4012-aa32-dc0c697c4538/images/icon_important.png)

Important The Import Status field must have a length of 255.
2. Molly then creates a lookup relationship field called **Survey 1 Imported**. This field will store a link to the record that NPSP Data Importer created or updated. She relates the field to her custom Survey object.

Note If you need a refresher on creating custom objects and fields, see Trailhead modules [Custom Objects: Quick Look](https://trailhead.salesforce.com/en/content/learn/modules/create-a-custom-object-quick-look) and [Custom Fields: Quick Look](https://trailhead.salesforce.com/en/content/learn/modules/custom-fields-quick-look).

Now, Molly is ready to create the Object Group.

## Create an Object Group

Follow along with Molly as she creates an Object Group for her custom Survey object:

1. Click the **NPSP Settings** tab. If you don't see the tab, find it in the App Launcher (![App Launcher icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sfdo-nonprofit_success_pack-264-0-0-production-enus/bd2879e2-2bdc-4012-aa32-dc0c697c4538/resources-product/images/app_launcher_icon.png)).
2. Click **System Tools** | **Advanced Mapping**.
3. Click **Configure Advanced Mapping**.
4. Click **Create New Object Group**.
5. Fill in the fields as follows:

    - Group Name: **Survey 1 Group**. Choose any unique name for the new Object Group. The standard naming convention is \[Target Object\] Group.
    - Object Name: **Survey (Survey\_\_c)**.  Indicates the target object where the records ultimately end up.
    - Is Child/Parent: **Child**. Describes how the new Object Group is related to the Object Group in the Of this Object Group field. In this example, Survey 1 Group is a child of Contact 1.
    - Of this Object Group: **Contact 1**. The Object Group that the new Object Group is related to.
    - Through this field: **Survey 1 Survey Participant (Survey\_1\_Survey\_Participant\_\_c)**. Indicates the field on the child object that connects the Object Groups.
    - Link to Record: **Survey 1 Imported (Survey\_1\_Imported\_\_c).** Stores a link to the record that was created or updated.
    - Import Status: S**urvey 1 Import Status (Survey\_1\_Import\_Status\_\_c)**. Indicates whether NPSP Data Importer successfully processed the record.
