Single Payment Gift (Untracked Solicitation)

Record and manage a one-time donation that wasn’t specifically solicited and has no previous commitment. Examples of this type of gift include an online donation, or a one-time donation that was made in person or through the mail. Represent these gifts with gift transaction records.

Multiple Payment Gift

A multiple-payment gift is one that involves several payments over time, such as a pledge or letter of intent. Organizations don’t always explicitly solicit these gifts, and it’s possible that the gifts are part of a larger marketing effort. Represent multiple-payment gifts with gift transactions and gift commitments. If it's necessary to track the solicitation of the gift, and if the payments follow a pattern, you can include opportunities and gift commitment schedules.

Recurring Gift

Record gifts with a set recurring schedule, often originating from external donation platforms. The donor continues donations until they cancel, or until the payment method expires or is declined. Represent recurring gifts with gift transactions, gift commitments, gift commitment schedules, and optionally, payment instruments.

Matching Gift

Record gifts from one body, such as an employer, that match other donations, sometimes dollar-for-dollar. Matching gifts have no schedule or previous commitment. Represent matching gifts with gift transactions. Opportunities and gift commitments aren’t necessary because you typically don’t track the solicitation of multi-payment commitments.

After you enter the matching gift, link it to the relevant initial donation. Update the Matching Employer Transaction lookup field on the Gift Transaction record that represents the initial donation with the newly created matching gift.

Inbound Grants

Record and manage solicited donations, which typically entail an application process and you can pay as a lump sum or in multiple installments. Represent inbound grants with gift commitments, gift commitment schedules, gift transactions, and opportunities.

When you relate your gift entry to a gift commitment, the system automatically creates a gift transaction. Track any written documents regarding grant distribution against a gift commitment.

In-Kind Gift

Manage and record non-monetary donations, such as products or goods. Organizations don’t always solicit In-kind gifts. Examples of in-kind gifts include:

- Products donated as part of a sponsorship
- Products donated to a food bank
- Clothing or household goods donated to a thrift store

Represent in-kind gifts with gift commitments. If it’s necessary to track the solicitation of the gift, or if the gift is part of a mixed or multi-payment commitment, you can create opportunities.

Gift from Donor-Advised Fund

Manage and record gifts from a charitable account where a donor takes an immediate tax deduction when contributing cash or securities. The funds are then invested and the recipient can donate them to charitable organizations. Represent gifts from donor-advised funds with gift transactions, gift commitments, gift commitment schedules, and gift soft credits. If it’s necessary to track the solicitation of the gift, you can use opportunities.

An example of a gift from donor-advised funds is when Alex Brown makes an outright gift to Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund. Fidelity includes that transaction in their next payment to the charity. Fidelity receives the hard credit and Alex Brown receives the soft credit for the gift.
