# Student Information System Policy Rules

Use extensible policy rules in Education Cloud to scale operations and establish transparent and auditable processes.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col style="width:100%"></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: Lightning Experience</td></tr><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: <strong>Enterprise</strong>, <strong>Performance</strong>, <strong>Unlimited</strong>, and <strong>Developer</strong> Editions with Education Cloud</td></tr></tbody></table>

To support education-specific operations at scale, the student information system rules framework uses:

- [Context Definitions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.context_service_context_definitions.htm&language=en_US)

Context definitions ensure efficient data access at every step of the process.
- [Expression Sets](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.expression_sets.htm&language=en_US)

Expression sets calculate business rules using connected steps built from variables, constants, conditions, calculations, lookups, and aggregations.
- [About Automation with Salesforce Flow](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.automate_about.htm&language=en_US)

Salesforce Flow tools help you quickly set up and change automation solutions.
- [Batch Management](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.concept_batch_management.htm&language=en_US)

Batch Management helps companies optimize business processes that handle a high volume of standard and custom object records.

For a typical process, the steps involved in the framework are:

1. A screen flow, Omniprocess, or Lightning web component triggers a platform event, such as a grade point average (GPA) calculation or eligibility check for an academic term registration timeline.
2. The platform event triggers an event-triggered flow.
3. The event-triggered flow engages the batch management framework.
4. The batch management framework engages an auto-launched flow.
5. The flow runs an invocable action to get batch jobs by ID.
6. The flow runs another invocable action to run an expression set (policy rule) by ID.

Note You can customize and use the invocable action, ExecuteExprSetWithContext, available with Education Cloud.
7. The expression set with a predefined context definition calculates the results.
8. A business element configured in the expression set stores the log of the calculation run.
9. The logs are shown on a custom UI component based on Decision Explainer.

Customize the rules framework based on your institution’s processes and specific requirements.

These features are available with Education Cloud:

- [Eligibility Verification and Assignment for Registration Timelines](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.ec_eligibility_verification_and_assignment_for_registration_timelines.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Education Cloud uses the student information system policy rules framework to verify which students enrolled in an academic term qualify for a registration timeline. After verification, the same framework assigns that timeline to the students who qualify. Verification and assignment are two related phases.")
- [Academic Score Calculations](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sfdo.ec_academic_score_calculations.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Calculate academic scores, such as term GPA, for students enrolled in an academic term by using configurable policy rules. Admins define the calculation logic once, and Education Cloud applies it to every enrollment in the term in a batch.")
