An admin prepares the structure for Attendance, including the codes, the policy, trusted sources, and how source signals resolve. Your institution then integrates its own systems and devices, such as a card reader, a learning management system, or a voice agent, to send attendance signals into that structure for your daily operations.

1. To track attendance outcomes, create a code set for each outcome, such as present, absent, tardy, excused absence, or early departure.
    1. From the App Launcher, find and select **Code Sets**, and then click **New**.
    2. Enter a name that identifies the code.
    3. Enter a code that your systems and reports use for the outcome.
    4. Make the code active so that it's available for use.
    5. If the code applies to only part of the year, set effective start and end dates.
    6. Save your changes.
2. To define how attendance is captured and interpreted, create an attendance policy for each set of rules.
    1. From the App Launcher, find and select **Attendance Policies**, and then click **New**.
    2. Enter a name.
    3. Make the policy active so that it's available for use.
    4. Select an attendance model.
    5. Select a submission mode.

The mode determines whether the attendance-taking event submits entries by the full roster or by exception.
    6. Save your changes.
3. Create an attendance source type for each channel that captures attendance.
    1. From the App Launcher, find and select **Attendance Source Types**, and then click **New**.
    2. Enter a name, such as Instructor Submission, Card Swipe, or Parent Call.
    3. Select a code.
    4. Save your changes.
4. Create an attendance policy source type for each source that a policy uses.

The policy source type connects a source to the policy and ranks its priority in the resolution.

    1. From the App Launcher, find and select **Attendance Policy Source Types**, and then click **New**.
    2. Select an attendance policy.
    3. Select an attendance source type.
    4. Assign a priority.
    5. If you want this source's signals to resolve entries without manual review, select **Auto Resolve**.
    6. Save your changes.
5. Assign the attendance policy to the academic records that it governs.

Select the applicable attendance policy on a learning program, learning course, or course offering record.
