# Workforce Scheduling Rule Type: Required Resources

Required Resources is a Workforce Scheduling work rule type that ensures that a service appointment’s required resource preferences are respected. If a service appointment, work order, or work order line item has a related Resource Preference record of type Required for a particular service resource, a Required Resources work rule ensures that the related service appointments are assigned to that service resource. Required Resources work rules are applicable to field and on-site scheduling.

Required Resources work rules are a useful way to preserve one-on-one customer-provider relationships, such as home healthcare. These work rules are highly restrictive, because they limit the pool of potential assigned resources to consider only those who are listed as required in the Resource Preferences related list on the related work order or account.

You can also create Resource Preference records at the account level. However these preference records are enforced only when listed on the work order or work order line item. When listing these records on the account, a built-in trigger logic is used with standard actions such as Schedule New Appointment, Change Time Slot, and Find Candidates. This logic automatically creates Resource Preference records related to the work order or work order line item based on the resource preferences defined at the account level.

If you’re creating a work order or work order line item from custom code or automation, and you’ve populated the account on the work order or work order line item that has Resource Preferences, those records aren’t automatically recreated on the work order or work order line item automatically.

Create work rules from Setup. Find and go to **Workforce Scheduling**, and under **Appointment Scheduling Logic**, select **Work Rules**. To view or add work rule fields open the Object Manager in Setup and select the **Work Rule** custom object. To add work rules to a scheduling policy, see [Create and Manage Scheduling Policies in Workforce Scheduling](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.wfs_policies_manage.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Scheduling policies combine work rules and service objectives to control which resources and time slots Workforce Scheduling assigns to each appointment. Work rules decide who’s eligible, and service objectives decide who’s the best fit. During scheduling and optimization, the engine applies these criteria against factors like resource skills, travel time, and urgency to make sure the right person is assigned to the right job efficiently.").
