# Set Up Related Objects for Native GIS

Plot the records in a work order's related list on the map without syncing to ArcGIS. Choose the related object and record type, specify where its location comes from, and style the marker that mobile workers see.

A related object plots the records in a work order's related list directly on the map, without syncing to ArcGIS, so it suits dynamic data that changes with the work. To learn how related objects compare to connectors, see [Data Layers for Native GIS](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.mfs_native_gis_data_layers.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Plot Salesforce data on Native GIS maps in the Field Service mobile app. On the Data Layers tab in Field Maps Settings, set up a connector to sync data to ArcGIS as a reference layer, or map related objects directly from Salesforce without syncing.").

1. From Setup, find and select **Field Maps Settings**.
2. Open the **Data Layers** tab.
3. In the **Related Objects** section, click **New Related Object**.
4. Under **Object & Location**, identify the records to plot on the map.
    1. **Target Object** is set to **Work Order** and can't be changed. Related objects are always linked to work orders.
    2. From **Related Object**, select an object with records related to work orders, such as work order line items or a custom object.
    3. From **Record Type**, choose the record type to display on the map.
5. Under **Location**, specify where to get the coordinates for plotting the records.
    1. To use a location field on the related object's own records, select **Use the related object's location**.
    2. To use the location from a lookup to another object, select **Reference another object's location**, and then select the object that holds the coordinates.
    3. From **Location Field**, select the field with the location coordinates. Choose a geolocation field for points, or a text field that contains GeoJSON for lines and polygons.
6. Under **Marker Styling**, choose how the records appear on the map. These options become available after you configure the object and location details.

    1. **Shape** is set for you based on the location field's data type: Point for a geolocation field, or Line or Polygon for a GeoJSON text field.
    2. For **Icon**, click **Choose Icon**, select a Standard or Utility icon, and click **Choose**.
    3. For **Color**, choose a Default or Custom color, and click **Done**.
    4. Confirm the result in **Marker Preview**.

7. Click **Save**.

To let mobile workers create records or update a record's location from the map, assign map actions to the related object. See [Create Map Actions for Mobile Workers](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.mfs_native_gis_create_map_action.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Save mobile workers time and improve location accuracy by letting them complete field tasks directly from the map. Set up map actions to assign geospatial drawing tools to work order actions and object actions, so that mobile workers can create records and update locations by tapping or drawing on the map instead of entering coordinates by hand.").

**Considerations**

- Related objects plot only records tied to the work order. Because they use the app's priming mechanism, they suit dynamic data that changes with the work. Use a connector instead for static, high-volume data that exceeds the app's offline priming limits, such as Assets, or to show records that aren't associated with the work order, such as nearby assets that mobile workers view in a geospatial context. See [Set Up a Native GIS Connector](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.mfs_native_gis_connector_setup.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "To view Salesforce objects on the map, define a connector to automatically sync the Salesforce data with the relevant ArcGIS hosted feature layer. Map Salesforce objects and fields with ArcGIS layers, and define how often the connector should run. To update data at different intervals, you can create multiple connectors for each type of sync interval.").
- Mobile workers can view and create or update the records in a related object, so make sure that they have access to those records.
