Build accurate application dependency views from observed network traffic. The Application Dependency Mapping process job links applications and hosts by using connection data collected during discovery.

How Application Dependencies Are Mapped
The Application Dependency Mapping (ADM) process job analyzes the network connections reported by discovered hosts. For each connection, the job identifies the hosts by IP address and matches the applications on those hosts by process name and port. If an application can't be identified on one or both sides, the job creates the relationship at the host level.
The job records the source and target ports, host names, and protocol on each Communicates With relationship.
When to Run the Job
Run the job after host discovery. Rerun it regularly to keep dependency views current as applications and network traffic patterns change. To start the job, see Run a Process Job.
Relationships Created
| Source and Target | Relationship | What It Means | How It’s Matched |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Instance to Software Instance | Communicates With | A specific application on one host communicates with a specific application on another host. | The job finds both hosts by IP address and identifies the applications by process name and listening or established port. |
| Software Instance to Host | Communicates With | A specific application communicates with a host when the application on the other side can't be identified. | The job identifies one application and uses the host on the side where no application matches the process and port. |
| Host to Host | Communicates With | Two hosts communicate when neither side can be matched to a specific application. | The job finds both hosts by IP address and doesn't find an application match on either side. |
