# IT Hardware Asset Management Overview

When you manage your internal IT asset inventory, such as employee laptops and phones, use an asset-first data model to streamline fulfillments, returns, and lifecycle management. Use the IT Asset Management suite's integration and automation features to process large-scale transitions, synchronize records, and orchestrate lifecycles with proactive assistance.

Historically, asset tracking relied on the [Field Service](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.fs_overview.htm&type=5&language=en_US) data model, which used a serialized product to link inventory to an asset. Because you circulate IT assets internally instead of selling them, the asset-first data model eliminates the dependency on serialized products. Link assets directly to fulfillment, return, and lifecycle entities.

## Automate and Integrate Asset Workflows

Orchestrate the complete lifecycle of your internal hardware assets with standardized workflows. Centralized automation features help your IT department save time and maintain accurate inventory records.

- **Asset-Based Inventory**: Track hardware stock across locations in real time. Link assets directly to a product item record to track granular quantities. Monitor state-based balances like Quantity Available, Quantity Allocated, Quantity In Transit, Quantity Damaged, and Quantity On Hold. Granular tracking prevents fulfillment delays and avoids over-promising assets.
- **Asset Lifecycle Management**: Coordinate end-to-end lifecycle workflows directly within your Salesforce org. IT teams manage hardware requests, sourcing, deployment, maintenance, refresh, reclaim, and secure disposal. Standardized workflows include connected tracking for Fulfillment Orders, Return Orders, and Disposal Orders.
- **Bulk Actions**: Perform critical lifecycle transitions on a selected group of assets simultaneously. Reclaim, refresh, and dispose of large groups of assets with a few clicks by using batch processing. Run rapid bulk updates from an asset list view or an uploaded CSV file.
- **Asset to Configuration Item Sync**: Keep your IT Asset Management (ITAM) and Configuration Management Database (CMDB) records perfectly aligned. Event-driven, bidirectional synchronization updates records at the field level. Field mapping resolves data conflicts, eliminates manual data entry, and reduces data drift.
- **Agentforce for IT Asset Management**: Orchestrate asset lifecycles with proactive, conversational assistance. Launch agent templates built for custom ITAM goals. Fulfillers and employees interact with specialized tools like the Sourcing Agent to automate hardware allocation.
