# Set Up Shifts for Field Service

Shifts in Field Service let you define variable working periods for your shift-based workforce, such as contractors or on-call staff. Create shifts for particular dates and times when you need coverage, and assign them to service resources. When the Field Service managed package is installed, scheduling and optimization considers shifts assigned to service resources as availability for assigned work in addition to the service resource’s Operating Hours on their Service Territory or Territory Member record.

- **[What Are Shifts?](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.fs_shifts_plan.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Shifts let you set up work intervals that vary from day to day or week to week. You can extend or replace your operating hours with shifts.
- **[Create a Job Profile for Shifts](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.fs_job_profile_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
With Field Service, you can describe different kinds of shifts by using a job profile. To indicate the experience or expertise required for a job, add skills to the job profile. Job profiles and related skill requirements are referenced when you’re using shift-assignment tools, such as the Get Candidates shift scheduling action, or when you’re assigning shifts in bulk. For example, a healthcare company can use job profiles to differentiate shifts that require on-call nurse practitioners from social workers or therapists.
- **[Prepare Your Org for Shift Scheduling](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.fs_shifts_prepare_scheduling.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Add rules, objectives, and constraints that help shift managers assign the right service resources to shifts. You can account for a service resource’s preferred hours with scheduling preferences. After you define your shift scheduling objectives, you can use the Get Candidates Shift action (not to be confused with the Get Candidates action for assigning service appointments to service resources) and Mass Shift Update actions to assign shifts to service resources.
- **[Build Repeating Shift Patterns](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.fs_shift_patterns.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Save time creating shifts by defining commonly used patterns of shifts in Field Service. Create templates that define the start time and job profile. Then build a pattern that lists the shift templates to use each day.
