# Considerations for Ghost Rules

Ghost rules are payout rules where the output doesn’t contribute to a rep's total commission amount for a statement period. Ghost rules are helpful in situations where you want to start building or testing rules for the next quarter or year, or when you want to perform mid-year plan changes.

- Ghost rules are visible only to uses with these privileges. An icon appears next to the rule name on a rep’s statement.
    - The default Company Admin role
    - The default Finance role
    - A custom role with the Designer Configuration: Manage permission turned on
- Ghost rules are commonly used in these scenarios.
    - Calculating reporting fields
    - Calculating reporting metrics
    - Updating rules
    - Testing rules
- To make a payout rule a ghost rule, turn it on from the right panel under PAYOUT.
- You can track the ghost rule results against your current commission plan. Ghost rules help you make crucial decisions as you finalize the plans for next year, and you can use the data or analysis and reporting.
- If a ghost rule assigned to a plan has an error, the statement also has an error.
