# Differences Between Line-By-Line and Lump-Sum Rules

In Salesforce Spiff Designer, you can build line-by-line rules or lump-sum rules. The rule type affects functionality on the commission statement and reporting options.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: both Salesforce Classic (not available in all orgs) and Lightning Experience</td></tr><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: <strong>Enterprise</strong>, <strong>Unlimited</strong>, and <strong>Developer</strong> Editions</td></tr><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available for an additional cost in: <strong>Professional</strong> Edition with Web Services API Enabled</td></tr></tbody></table>

For most commission use cases, we recommend line-by-line rules that calculate a commission for every deal and opportunity in a commission period. Lump-sum rules are useful for occasions when an aggregated payout or a single lump-sum payment is necessary, such as when a rep earns a flat bonus for hitting a certain number of meeting targets.

Review these differences between line-by-line and lump-sum rules.

| Consideration | Line-by-Line Rule | Lump-sum Rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Rule usage | Calculates a commission amount for each element in a set of entries such as deals, line items, and opportunities. Sum the amount, such as a value being calculated for each row in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or a commission for every deal that is closed, to get the total commission for the rule. | Calculates a commission based on the given criteria and sums a field from a data filter or list. The calculation isn't applied to each item of filtered data. |
| Data filter usage | Data filter required. | Data filter not required. |
| Commission total | Calculates the sum of the output values for each record. If your commission calculation comes from a datasheet, that calculation applies to a collection of records from your data filter. | Calculates a single commission amount. |
| Report usage | Allows for granular data such as commission earned per deal and close date. | Doesn't allow for line item and deal-specific data because a commission amount isn’t calculated at the line-item level. |
| Rep tracing | Supports tracing the calculations for every line on their statement. | Supports tracing only the payout amount for the rule itself. |
