1. Upload the historical commission data into Spiff and include these required fields.

    - Deal ID
    - Amount
    - Capitalization start date
    - Amortization start date
    - Amortization end date

See [Imported Data in Salesforce Spiff](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.spiff_import.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "You can manually import data into Salesforce Spiff, in addition to data synced from external sources, such as Salesforce. You can view your imported data in Data Sources and Designer.").
2. Create a data filter for your imported data.

See [Create a Data Filter in Salesforce Spiff](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.spiff_data_filter_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create data filters in Salesforce Spiff without writing any code.").
3. Create a payout rule where the commission amount references the amount field on the datasheet.

Add the rule to a hidden plan or to a ghost rule for an admin. Give the rule and plan names that clearly identify historical data. See [Hidden Plans in Salesforce Spiff](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.spiff_plans_hidden.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "In Salesforce Spiff, create plans that are visible only to certain users so that you can generate reports, experiment with new rules, perform mid-year changes, or prepare plans in advance."), [Create a Payout Rule](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.spiff_payout_rule_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "From Salesforce Spiff Designer, create a payout rule for a commission plan."), and [Considerations for Ghost Rules](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.spiff_rules_ghost.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Ghost rules are payout rules where the output doesn’t contribute to a rep's total commission amount for a statement period. Ghost rules are helpful in situations where you want to start building or testing rules for the next quarter or year, or when you want to perform mid-year plan changes.").
4. Create a historical expense portfolio.

See [Set Up a Commission Expense Report in Salesforce Spiff](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.spiff_expense_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "To create a commission expense report, set up general ledger accounts, establish fringe benefit rules, and create a commission expense portfolio.").

    - For the value to capitalize, reference the payout rule you created. Leave the amount field blank for the obligation commission amount that Spiff calculated. You can add logic that changes the amount to expense.
    - Include the capitalization date, amortization start date, and amortization end date.

The effective dates in the portfolio don't have to match the capitalization and amortization dates. If the effective dates are January 1, 2025 through January 31, 2025 and the capitalization date is January 2023, the portfolio capitalizes on the specified date and amortization begins on the specified date.
