# Considerations for Getting Started with Content Collections

Content collections provide flexibility for your company’s learning experience, but they also introduce complexity forenablement sites that have published content. If your company already has an enablement site, you can expand your learning experience by using content collections.

## Understand the Impact on Your Existing Content

Before the Salesforce Winter ’22 release, all content in your enablement site was published under a single namespace. An enablement site had only one namespace, so all users with access to your enablement site could access all content. Learners with different training or enablement requirements searched your enablement site to find the appropriate trails and modules for their specialized roles.

In Salesforce Winter ’22, a namespace is known as a content collection. Instead of a single namespace in your enablement site, your company can create multiple content collections. Each audience can efficiently access content in their appropriate content collection without filtering through other topics.

The introduction of content collections doesn’t affect the functionality of your current learning experience:

- All your existing content belongs to a single content collection, which inherits the API name of the namespace that you created when you set up your subdomain.
- All your current learners can still access existing content in that single collection.

## Understand the Impact on Previewing Content

The preview that you launch from the Trailmaker Release app shows new or changed content that you plan to publish as part of the same release. New or changed content appears in the context of published content.

Before the Salesforce Winter ’22 release, this release preview reflected all content in your enablement site. After Salesforce Winter ’22, the preview reflects only the content collection where the release is created.

To learn more, check out [Preview a Release in Trailmaker Release](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_preview_content_on_mytrailhead.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Your content stakeholders can preview all the new or changed trails and modules that you plan to publish in a release. The full release preview shows new or changed content in the context of all published content in your company’s enablement site. Only users with the appropriate permission can access the full release preview.").

## Plan Your Permissions Strategy in Advance

Match content collections with permission sets to support your various learning audiences and control which content users can access. The flexibility of content collections means that your company can segment learning content in multiple ways. Check out [Examples of Content Collections](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_content_collections_examples.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Each company’s learning experience is different and supports unique groups of learners and a broad range of training and enablement requirements. Content collections can be simple or complex, depending on the size and learning requirements of your company. To help you generate ideas for fulfilling your company’s specific content strategy, explore examples of suggested content collection scenarios.").

Before you begin, we recommend that you develop a strategy for organizing your collections and permission sets.

Note You can create up to 100 content collections.

## Set Up Content Collections

To start using content collections in your enablement site, an admin completes these steps.

1. In Salesforce, from Setup, go to the Content Permissions Assistant. Follow the prompts for updating your admin permissions to enable the Manage Content Collections permission. Then, create more content collections. Complete the steps in [Allow Learners to Access Enablement Site Content Collections](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_content_permissions.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Ensure that learners can access only the trails and modules that are relevant to their disciplines or job requirements. Create content collections for your different audiences, and then use permission sets to enable access to specific content collections. Only learners with permission to access a particular content collection can view and complete the trails and modules included in the collection.").
2. In Trailmaker, move existing content into the appropriate content collection. This action has implications for learners who can currently access your existing content. To learn more about the considerations for moving existing content to a new content collection, see [Migrate Published Content to a Different Content Collection](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_content_collections_migrate.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "You can move your company’s existing learning content from one content collection to another. For example, maybe your company previously published content under your enablement site’s single namespace before multiple content collections became available. And now, you want to move content to a content collection for a specific audience.").
3. When your content collections are ready, update learner permissions so that they can access only specific content collections. See the [Disable the View All Content Permission](#mth_content_permissions_considerations__mth_view_all_content) section in this topic.

## Disable the View All Content Permission

Before the Salesforce Winter ’22 release, all enablement site users required the myTrailhead Content Access permission to access your enablement site.

In Salesforce Winter ’22 or later, the myTrailhead Content Access permission is renamed, and its scope is changed.

| Release | Permission Name | Permission Scope |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Salesforce Summer ’22 | View All Content | Access all content from any content collection that's published on your company's enablement site (formerly myTrailhead subdomain). |
| Salesforce Winter ’22 | myTrailhead View All Content | Access all content from any content collection that's published on your company's myTrailhead subdomain. |
| Earlier than Salesforce Winter ’22 | myTrailhead Content Access | Access any content that's published on your company's myTrailhead subdomain. |

If a user had the myTrailhead Content Access permission enabled before Salesforce Winter ’22, they still have the renamed permission enabled. However, if you’re using content collections, you probably want learners to access only specific content. Most likely, the only users that you want to have access to all content are admins, release managers, and similar super users.

After you create content collections, we recommend that you update your learner permissions:

1. Enable access for specific content collections using the Enablement Content Collections Access settings on a permission set.
2. Disable the View All Content permission.

## Understand the Impact on Publishing Roles

Content permissions determine only what learners can access when they log in to your enablement site. Content permissions don’t affect how your internal publishing roles—such as content creators and release managers—work with content in the Trailmaker Content and Trailmaker Release apps.

## Update Trailmixes and Learning Paths

Content collections are compatible with assignments in the Trail Tracker app or Learning Paths in Lightning Experience. When creating content collections and updating content permissions, make sure that learners can access the collections that contain their assigned content. For trailmixes, if a learner can’t access a content collection that a trail or module belongs to, the learner can’t access any part of the trailmix.

## Access a Content Collection from Slack or the Trailhead GO App

Learners can also access enablement site content by:

- Installing the Trailhead Slack app and connecting their enablement site account
- Installing the Trailhead GO mobile app on their iOS, iPadOS, or Android™ device

To access a trail or module from these apps, a learner must have access to the content collection that contains the trail or module.

## Remove a Learner from a Content Collection

If a learner loses access to a content collection, they no longer see earned points or badges from that content collection on their profile. But, the learner didn’t actually lose those points or badges—they only lost permission to access the content that’s used to calculate their profile data. Other users can still see those completed points and badges on the learner’s profile, but only if those users still have access to the old content collection.

## Understand the Impact on New Enablement Sites

If your company is new to enablement sites, we recommend that an admin completes these steps before getting started with content collections.

1. Create your enablement site. As part of this process, you also set up your first content collection. Complete the steps in [Set Up Your Enablement Site's Subdomain and First Content Collection](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_set_up_your_mth_subdomain_and_namespace.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Your subdomain is used in the URL where learners access your published trails and modules and where your authorized users log in to the Trailmaker apps. A subdomain name is an extension of your company’s brand. When you create your subdomain, you also create your company’s first content collection—a batch of content that you want to make available to certain learners. Later, you can create more content collections in Salesforce.").
2. Set up the rest of your enablement site, including your authentication provider, user permissions, brand identity, and more. Review the topics in [Configure Your Enablement Site](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_configure_mytrailhead.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Set up the enablement site for your company, including your subdomain, authentication provider, user permissions, and brand identity.").
