# Compare an Enablement Site and Trailhead

Trailhead is a free, online learning platform that’s a fun, engaging way for anyone to learn new skills and earn career credentials. Trailhead consists of a library of content that Salesforce has produced, intended to help anyone learn in-demand technical, business, and soft skills. With an enablement site, your company can implement that same platform on a separate, branded subdomain, and then deliver original content that fulfills your company’s learning requirements.

## Similarities between an Enablement Site and Trailhead

An enablement site and Trailhead consist of the same building blocks for learning experiences:

![Shared elements for Sales Enablement and Trailhead learning experiences](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sales-mytrailhead-264-0-0-production-enus/0d6bc03d-58c7-47e8-89c9-5e00c98b5485/mytrailhead/images/trailhead_structure.png)

Learner (1)

A user who’s completing the learning experience.

Authentication Provider (2)

A service that validates a learner’s username and password for logging in.

Trail (3)

A guided, sequential path through multiple related modules, aimed at a learner’s specific role or objective.

Module (4)

A single learning topic, which consists of multiple units. A learner earns a badge for their profile by completing a module.

Unit (5)

A subtopic within a module. A unit identifies specific learning objectives that a learner can complete quickly, (typically in 10–20 minutes.

Assessment (6)

A quiz at the conclusion of a unit that evaluates the learner’s comprehension of the unit’s learning objectives. A learner earns points by completing the assessment.

Trailmix (7)

A custom set of learning content that can contain trails, modules, or links to custom content, such as a URL, video, or PDF. Anyone can create and share a trailmix, unlike a trail, which only a credentialed content publisher can create.

## Content Differences between an Enablement Site and Trailhead

Trailhead uses the full power of the Salesforce Platform to deliver some enhanced functionality that isn’t available for an enablement site.

Trailhead includes some content types that aren’t available in an enablement site:

Project

A hands-on activity where a learner follows steps to build an app, component, process, or workflow. A project can be standalone or included in a trail.

Superbadge

A large project that spans a feature area and provides a real-life business scenario that a learner must implement successfully.

Trailhead also supports another option for a unit’s assessment:

Hands-on Challenge

An assessment type that requires a learner to complete specific steps in an actual Salesforce org that they use for practice.

There are also differences in how content is available to learners through an enablement site versus Trailhead.

| Consideration | Enablement Site | Trailhead |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where learners access content | Your company’s custom subdomain, such as https://your-company.my.trailhead.com | Publicly at https://trailhead.salesforce.com |
| Impact on your company’s budget | Paid license | Free to anyone |
| Publication frequency | Whenever you like | Whenever Salesforce publishes content |

## Authentication Considerations for an Enablement Site and Trailhead

When your company sets up an enablement site, you provide different content in a different environment than Trailhead.

For your company’s enablement site, users can log in using one of these authentication methods:

- Salesforce Identity for Enablement, which uses the Salesforce Identity access management service with your enablement site as a connected app.
- Trailblazer.me (TBID), which uses a separate profile that provides access to multiple Salesforce products.

The authentication provider that you choose determines how learners consume content across your enablement site and Trailhead.
