When you add content to a release from Trailmaker Content, Trailmaker automatically adds the manifest item, assigns the Upsert operation to the item, and uploads the backpack to the release. All of these actions are necessary to add the content to a release. Complete these steps even if you already added a release item with the Upsert operation in Trailmaker Release. To learn more, review [Considerations for Managing Releases](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_how_releases_work.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "A release specifies the list of the modules and trails that you want to publish together at the same time. You can publish a module or trail only if it’s added to a release. Before you start lining up your planned releases, review some important guidelines about how releases work in Trailmaker.").

Important To add a new unpublished trail with unpublished modules to a release, add the content in this order.

- First add the modules to the release.
- Then add the trail.

1. In Trailmaker Content, add a module or trail to an unpublished release from the workspace or from the module or trail page.

    - From the workspace, from the Actions menu for a module or trail, select **Add to Release**.

    - From a module or trail page, click **Add to Release**.

2. Select the content collection (1) where you want the content to appear, and select the unpublished release (2) that determines when the content is published.

![Add to a Release window in Trailmaker Content, showing selected namespace and release](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sales-mytrailhead-264-0-0-production-enus/0d6bc03d-58c7-47e8-89c9-5e00c98b5485/mytrailhead/images/tm_content_add_to_release_modal_choose.png)

To successfully select a content collection and release:

    - Make sure that you applied [all required metadata for your content](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_metadata_on_mytrailhead.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "When you create trails, modules, and units, you also create metadata about your content, such as the title, description, and target audience. Learners can filter the content on your enablement site based on the metadata values you assign.").
    - In Salesforce, make sure that a Salesforce admin [created content collections](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_content_permissions.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Ensure that learners can access only the trails and modules that are relevant to their disciplines or job requirements. Create content collections for your different audiences, and then use permission sets to enable access to specific content collections. Only learners with permission to access a particular content collection can view and complete the trails and modules included in the collection.").
    - In Trailmaker Release, make sure that the [selected content collection has an unpublished release with an Open status](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_how_releases_work.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "A release specifies the list of the modules and trails that you want to publish together at the same time. You can publish a module or trail only if it’s added to a release. Before you start lining up your planned releases, review some important guidelines about how releases work in Trailmaker.").
3. Click **Next**.
4. To copy the link to the content in the full release preview, click **Copy** in the success window. Save the link to a handy location, such as your desktop.

Note We recommend that you store this backpack in your version control system. This step helps ensure that other collaborators can access the most recent version of your content. You can also download the backpack from Trailmaker Release after the release is published. To learn more, see [Download a Backpack from Trailmaker Release](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.mth_tm_release_download.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "From Trailmaker Release, you can download the backpack ZIP file for a module or trail published in your company’s enablement site. With this backpack, your content creators can easily access the latest released version of content the next time they want to update it.").
6. Click **Done**.
