3. To complete your forecast setup, [give access to the users who forecast](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.forecasts3_setup_users.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Sales reps, sales managers, and sales executives need permission to use forecasts and access to the Forecasts tab. They must also be part of the forecast hierarchy.") and add them to the [forecast hierarchy](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.forecasts3_hierarchy_overview.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Your position in the forecast hierarchy determines whose forecasts you can see. By default you see your forecast, which is made up of the reps and other forecast managers below you in the hierarchy. You can select other users below you in the hierarchy to view their forecasts. You cannot select people above you in the hierarchy.").

To get the most out of forecasts in Salesforce, set up forecast quotas, and review the other customizable options to fit your business. We also recommend [turning on historical trending](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.forecasts3_charts_setup.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "To give sales leaders the data they need when viewing forecasting charts, ensure that historical trending is on for Forecasting Item. Also verify that the retention period is set appropriately.") for the ForecastingItem, and setting the retention period to 13 months. Historical data gives sales leaders the data required to populate forecast charts and reports, and to show highlights about changes in forecast values in the last 7 days.
